Ultium – GM’s Electric Platform

2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV

GM is moving into the automotive electric future in a big way. We’ve seen the evolution within Chevy’s electric vehicles and another big leap is coming with their new, state-of-the-art GM Ultium Battery platform. GM’s new electric platform will make it possible for electric vehicles to have greater range, have more room, and, most importantly, be more affordable, which will be good news to Lexington drivers who are eager to make the switch to electric. Let’s go into more detail about GM’s Ultium platform.

GM Ultium Battery Performance

The GM Ultium battery pack is versatile and can be stacked horizontally or vertically. This will allow it to be installed with nearly every kind of drivetrain, including RWD. Here are some of the impressive performance highlights that you’ll be able experience on our Louisville roads:

  • Electric range of at least 300 miles on a full charge
  • 0-60 mph in as low as 3 seconds
  • Energy ranges from 50 to more than 200 kWh
  • FWD, RWD, and AWD applications (first of its kind to support both FWD and RWD variants)
  • Will operate at 400 volts and be capable of DC fast charging at up to 250 kW

GM’s Ultium Platform – Highlights

GM’s Ultium platform will revolutionize electric automotive power. Not only will it increase performance and efficiency, but it will also push the technology forward with the capability of updating itself and the battery modules whenever a new battery chemistry is developed. Here are some highlights:

  • The best large-format cells in the industry
  • Flat shape allowing for more passenger and cargo room
  • A modular battery system will allow the packs to be stacked for best distribution: vertically for trucks, SUVs, and crossovers, or horizontally for cars and performance vehicles
  • Large 23″ by 4″ by 0.4″ pouch-type cells that package energy more densely than cylindrical cells can
  • Will drive down costs for customers through more cost-effective design
  • Software adjusts the input power every 10 milliseconds, making the motors nearly 97% efficient
  • Better handling – a near 50/50 weight distribution of the vehicle and a lower center of gravity

GM’s Electric Platform – Ultium Charge 360

Of course, GM’s electric platform will need to be charged. GM is seeking to make that simple for customers through an initiative called, “Ultium Charge 360”. Here’s what it will accomplish:

  • Integration charging networks, GM vehicle mobile apps, and other products and services to simplify customer charging experience
  • Collaboration with seven major charging networks to offer customers more seamless access to nearly 60,000 plugs across the U.S. and Canada
  • GM vehicle mobile apps will enable EV customers to see real-time information from nearly 60,000 charging plugs throughout the U.S. and Canada, find stations along a route, and initiate and pay for charging
  • Partnering with EVgo to triple the size of the nation’s largest DC fast charging network by 2025
