New Silverado Ads Destroy the Aluminum F-150

The Ford F-150 continues to be the best-selling vehicle in the United States, but Chevrolet would like to convince you that they have a superior alternative.

The Silverado, which finished right behind the F-Series in the New York Daily News’ March 2015 ranking of the best-selling vehicles, is popular in it’s own right. The truck has seen a more than 14-percent increase in sales over the past year (compared to the less than three-percent drop for the Ford), but it’s still sold 80,000 less units than the F-Series.

To help differentiate between the two trucks (and, obviously, to help boost the vehicle’s sales), Chevrolet has released a new series of advertisements that praise the Silverado’s steel body… while criticizing the aluminum body of the F-150.

If you happen to be in the market for a new truck, check out the commercials below, and then get over to your local Chevy dealership as soon as possible. After all, if Chevy has their way, your Chevrolet dealers in Lexington, Kentucky may be sold out of the Silverado by the time you get there…

Steel Cage vs. Aluminum Cage

The first video shows four men having to choose between a cage made of steel or a cage made of aluminum. Why do they have to choose? Well, they were picking their shelter in anticipation of a 700-pound grizzly bear being released into the room. Predictably, the men all choose the steel cage, citing the aluminum as too “easy to bend” and “light.”

“The Almighty Aluminum Man”

The next video involves a focus group of comic enthusiasts debating whether “The Almighty Aluminum Man” is actually a logical superhero. The group laughs off the concept, criticizing the choice of metal. Members say they can easily crush an aluminum can with their hands, and many compare the metal to trash (although, they do acknowledge that it doesn’t corrode easily, making the suit “efficient” and “light weight”). One person even goes as far as to inquire whether the designers have a science education.

Meanwhile, the groups suggests some more logical metals, including platinum, zinc… and, you guessed it, steel.

Howie Long Compares the Two Trucks

The final video features football legend (and apparent Chevrolet spokesperson) Howie Long talking with Chevrolet Chief Engineer Eric Stanczak. The two discuss the differences between the Silverado and the F-150, with a particular focus on the different aluminum and steel frames.

In particular, Stanczak cites the excessive cost of aluminum, and he notes that body shops would be required to “invest in new tools and training” so they’d be ready to repair such a vehicle.

The crew also recreates an accident involving a large truck backing into both trucks. They’re both brought in to their respective brand’s dealership for repairs, and it ultimately takes 34 less days and $1,755 less to repair the Chevrolet.

When it comes down to it, there’s no denying that the Silverado’s steel frame is a better buy than the F-150’s aluminum frame. Whether it’s the metal’s strength, durability or cost to repair, the steel consistently comes out on top.
