Move over Equinox and Traverse, a new Chevy crossover is coming to town. Mike Colias of Automotive News reports that General Motors is planning on adding another crossover utility vehicle to their line, one that will be "slotted" ahead of the compact Equinox and "below" the full-size Traverse. It's going to be a while before you see this vehicle sitting on your local Lexington, Kentucky Chevrolet lot, but we might as well get excited while we wait for it's release… more As Colias describes, the move is clearly an indication by GM and Chevy that they want to begin instituting the strategies used by luxury brands, particularly these brands' ability to offer multiple "flavors" of a particular model. While crossover manufacturers typically release models in three particular sizes (think large, medium and small), companies are now looking to add fourth (and even fifth) options. Chevy was one of four brands (along with Honda, Nissan and Jeep) to offer 'extra-small' crossovers and one of four brands (along with Ford, Nissan and Hyundai) to offer the 'large' size. However, among popular car companies, they were the only one without a 'medium,' but that will likely change with the release of the new vehicle. Chevy will join Nissan as the only company to offer four sizes of crossovers. Of course, while the concept sounds generally straight forward, adding a new vehicle to the crossover line will require plenty of work. As Colias explains, the new vehicle could essentially be a "short-wheelbase version" of the Traverse, but it will still take lots of time and effort. Jack Nerad, executive marker analyst at Kelley Blue Book, told Colias that it would be a "smart play" to downsize the Equinox while also introducing a new three-row crossover. As a result, Chevy would offer potential buyers two choices for their two-seat and three-seat crossovers. "It helps for consumers to be able to compare vehicles," Nerad told Colias: "This crossover trend definitely has legs." There's been no news on a potential name for the vehicle, and it sounds like we'll have to wait a while to get any information. What we do know is that the crossover is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2017. That is some time away, and you may not have the ability to wait that long for a new car. The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado has been making headlines with some news peeking through the cracks.  Not only is it going to be getting a front end makeover, the transmission is getting updated to an 8 speed and the technology will now carry Android Auto as well as Apple’s CarPlay. Why Change What's Already Good? Chevy’s Silverado is GM’s best selling vehicle. So it begs the question, why the need for an updated look?  I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it right? Well no, not according to Chevy anyway.  In a desire to build on last years full size pickup sales, they’re keeping the momentum up with aggressive new tactics to entice buyers.  Basically, they’re responding to competition. It is not the time for Chevy to be resting on their laurels. In the world of pickup trucks, competition is fierce.  To quote the high school football coach from Dazed and Confused ‘OTSS’ - only the strong survive.  (By the way, remember some of the amazing Chevy pickups in that movie?  How much fun were 1970’s Chevy pickups?) Even though GM’s sales are sufficiently up, so are the competitors.  Now more than ever it is important to keep that edge. What’s Changed? Chevy Smile Definitely most noticeable on any Chevy pick up is its front grill or, it’s smile. Chevy has always had an enormous smile.  As definitive as their bowtie, their smile is their trademark. That being said, the 2016 Silverado’s front grill is entirely remodeled.  No smaller, just less shiny.  Like a teenager who just got their braces taken off, they smile bigger to show off the goods, not the metal and that’s what the 2016 Silverado has done. The chrome front is gone.  No more blinding shine.  An all black grill is separated by a body colored horizontal strip that stretches across the entire width of the grill, including separating the headlights. RIP Stacked Headlights The headlights have also changed.  No longer stacked on top of each other which has been a prominent feature on the Silverado since the 1980’s, the headlights will just have one pair. A smaller strip of stylized LED lights will illuminate under the headlights and highlight the body colored horizontal strip stretching across the girll.  This new look is both bold and dramatic. Chevy has been stacking their headlights for over 30 years now, but it will remain a form of nostalgia.  These new LED lights will be part of redefining the new Silverado.  Out with old... Front End The hood is no longer flat but actually quite sculpted.   Angled lines that cut down the length of the hood but prop the center up add a unique change. The bumper also received an updated look that appears more modern.  The chrome is limited to very small portions on the front beneath the fog lights.  The overall feel of the front end is suppose to inspire strength and masculinity.  However, it is rumored that Chevy will be offering 5 different versions of the front end alone, the 2016 Silverado will have plenty of different choices for the customer to chose from. The changes in the front end are to showcase strength and refinement.  The 2016 Silverado has dispensed with the flash and returns to what makes the GM pickups great: solid strength built on a reputation of dependability and reliability. Technology The exterior is not the only part of the newly updated 2016 Silverado.  Technology has also been updated with new customer focus. New onto the market and seeing how popular they’ve become, Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay arrived onto the scene this 2015 year.  Meant to encourage hands free cell phone use, Android Auto and CarPlay both connect to either carrier you currently have. The new Silverado will offer both Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay.  What is interesting is that it didn’t take allegiance to either Android or Apple.  GM went with both making it compatible for whichever carrier the driver uses. A newer version of MyLink will be updated and downloaded onto the 2016 Silverado.  MyLink is Chevy’s on board infotainment system. 8 Speed Transmission Currently the 8 speed transmission is offered on the 2015 Silverado as an upgraded option available only on 6.2L V8 engines.  The new 8 speed transmission will now be available to 2016 Silverado models that have a 5.3L V8 engine. The 8 speed transmission is bigger than the 6 speed transmission currently on all GM pickups.  It provides a higher first gear ratio which aids in more confidence when accelerating with heavy loads.  It also has a lower rear axle ratios that reduces engine rpms when on the highway increasing highway fuel economy. Reportedly weighing the same as a 6 speed, its presumed that the lack of difference in weight along with its change in rpms will really improve the Silverado's fuel economy. For the fourth quarter, it was a goal of GM’s to produce a pickup that was better on fuel economy. The 2016 Silverado makes it look promising. Competition Because profits from pick ups are so high, it is no question that that’s where GM makes their money.  GM’s pickup sales are already up 15% in just the first half of the year. Since the introduction of the Silverado 1500 in the spring of 2013, Chevy’s Silverado sales have grown by more than 10% each year.  Just this year it has been the fastest growing full size pick in sales.  However, it still hasn’t beaten Ford where it counts. The Ford F-series is currently the best selling full size truck.  Even though Ford’s sales are down from last year, it still is in the number one position.  GM follows with the next best Silverado and Sienna. Most recently Ford redesigned their F-150 choosing an aluminum frame consequently dropping 700 lbs.  GM is keeping their steel frame and choosing to point out in a new advertising campaign that Chevy trucks are still made with steel; solid strength, unlike their competitor. Right now, GM is building on their reputation of reliability and dependability.  The 2016 Silverado is an example of how to stay current and to keep challenging your best. While it is rumored that this is update is coincidental to Ford’s decline in sales as well as their choice for aluminum frame, GM doesn’t need Ford’s help in proving they make quality pickups.  The time for change and progress is always now. The Ford F-150 continues to be the best-selling vehicle in the United States, but Chevrolet would like to convince you that they have a superior alternative. The Silverado, which finished right behind the F-Series in the New York Daily News' March 2015 ranking of the best-selling vehicles, is popular in it's own right. The truck has seen a more than 14-percent increase in sales over the past year (compared to the less than three-percent drop for the Ford), but it's still sold 80,000 less units than the F-Series. To help differentiate between the two trucks (and, obviously, to help boost the vehicle's sales), Chevrolet has released a new series of advertisements that praise the Silverado's steel body… while criticizing the aluminum body of the F-150. Why do they have to choose? Well, they were picking their shelter in anticipation of a 700-pound grizzly bear being released into the room. Predictably, the men all choose the steel cage, citing the aluminum as too "easy to bend" and "light." "The Almighty Aluminum Man" The next video involves a focus group of comic enthusiasts debating whether "The Almighty Aluminum Man" is actually a logical superhero. The group laughs off the concept, criticizing the choice of metal. Members say they can easily crush an aluminum can with their hands, and many compare the metal to trash (although, they do acknowledge that it doesn't corrode easily, making the suit "efficient" and "light weight"). One person even goes as far as to inquire whether the designers have a science education. Meanwhile, the groups suggests some more logical metals, including platinum, zinc… and, you guessed it, steel. Howie Long Compares the Two Trucks The final video features football legend (and apparent Chevrolet spokesperson) Howie Long talking with Chevrolet Chief Engineer Eric Stanczak. The two discuss the differences between the Silverado and the F-150, with a particular focus on the different aluminum and steel frames. In particular, Stanczak cites the excessive cost of aluminum, and he notes that body shops would be required to "invest in new tools and training" so they'd be ready to repair such a vehicle. The crew also recreates an accident involving a large truck backing into both trucks. They're both brought in to their respective brand's dealership for repairs, and it ultimately takes 34 less days and $1,755 less to repair the Chevrolet. When it comes down to it, there's no denying that the Silverado's steel frame is a better buy than the F-150's aluminum frame. We've seen General Motors make some subtle changes to their OnStar system over the past couple of years, and we learned earlier this week that they will be adding their most significant feature yet: the 'Theft Alarm Notification.' As long as you're driving a 2014 (or later) model Chevy car, you can access this essential tool. So the next time you have to quickly park your Chevrolet at a Lexington, Kentucky gas station, you won't need to worry about locking the door. Your car's OnStar System has got you covered… more The Theft Alarm Notification system will notify a car owner via text, email or phone call if their car has been stolen. Some current Chevy vehicles, including the full-size Tahoe and Suburban LT and LTZ SUVs, are quipped with the Theft Protection Package, and the new notification system will integrate itself with the existing technology. This means an armed car's alarm will sound if the vehicle is lifted off the ground, a window is broken, or motion is detected within the vehicle. The system won't notify the cops, but a complementary service will. The existing Stolen Vehicle Assistance service has the capability to help track the vehicle (via the car's GPS) and subsequently alert the authorities to the car's location. The system can disable or slow down a stolen vehicle, allowing the police to catch up. "Prompt response and quick awareness of theft situations give customers a greater chance to recover stolen property," Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet's director of truck marketing, said in a press release. "By leveraging the connection that OnStar provides, Chevrolet owners can remain in contact with their vehicle, even when it is out of sight." This news follows GM's announcement that they're also going to be using OnStar technology to provide car owners with prognostic vehicle data (allowing you to compare your stats to other drivers), driving habits (which can later be used to get a good-driver discount from your car insurance), and car-specific, money-saving coupons. As mentioned above, all eligible OnStar subscribers can access the service, but they'll need a subscription to OnStar's Security of Guidance package. It will be available in the US and Canada later this summer. This bit of added protection could go a long way. While auto thefts have steadily been on the decline in the past decade, there are still close to 700,000 vehicles being stolen every year. As one of the firsts in the automotive industry to carry an on board interactive safety system, “Teen Driver” will come as a standard feature on the premium 2016 Chevy Malibu.  With more and more staggering statistics about teen accidents, parents and car manufacturers alike are taking larger strides in protecting their teens as they get behind the wheel. By taking advantage of the technology available, parents who are interested in how well their teen’s are driving when they’re not around can now keep track.  “Teen Driver” records certain information such as speed, mileage, radio volume then rates the teen on a report card.  The parents have access to this information to see how well their teen did and then the hope is the report will open dialogue about safe driving. more Why So Much Concern? Chevrolet of Lexington KY understands.  Unfortunately, teenagers are prone to certain behaviors that just makes their parents cringe.  No matter how hard you try, at some point, your teenager will forget, even if just for a moment, every bit of advice or lesson you ever instilled in them.  This isn’t their fault; it is their age ( of course you can’t tell them that). Teenagers are innately poor drivers.  They make poor decisions, exhibit questionable levels maturity, posses total commitment to invincibility and because of their inexperience in driving, lack a proper skill set. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States reports that the fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16 to 19-year-olds is nearly three times the rate for drivers ages 20 and over.  According to AAA, teens have the highest number of vehicle accidents every year.  These statistics are very disconcerting for parents and teens alike. Distractions play a large role in teen accidents. During tests done by AAA in order to gain statistics on teenage driving and accidents, found that distractions were responsible for six out of ten moderate to severe accidents.  Cell phone use and interactions with passengers make up 12-15% of all teenage accidents. "We developed this system so parents could use it as a teaching tool with their kids — they can discuss and reinforce safe driving habits,"  GM safety engineer MaryAnn Beebe. How Does It Work? As part of the on board infotainment system, parents can hook up the MyLink system via touch screen on the interface of 2016 Malibu.  Through this system parents can set limits on speed, volume, and mileage.  The Teen Drive system will give a visual and audible warning if any of the parental presets are exceeded.  Parents can access this information from the MyLink system. Teen Driver works when parent enables the feature by creating a PIN in the Settings menu of their available MyLink system.  The parent’s will then need to register their teen’s key fob. The system’s settings are turned on only to registered key fobs. Using the touchscreen on the interface, parents will have the access to predetermine speed limits, mileage, and volume.  Only the key set to the specifications will access Teen Drive mode. Teen Driver Report Card Along with the presets made by the parents, the system will lower or mute volume when a passenger or driver is not wearing a safety belt. Teen Driver will further alert the driver and parents to any of these situations should they arise: stability control, front and rear park assist, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, forward collision braking and traction control. At the end of the journey, the parent gets to review a ‘report card’ of sorts which will highlight if any of these above mentioned systems were utilized and further if any of the parental presets were exceeded.  While this may be viewed as a bit ‘Orwellian’, you cannot say these parents don’t care about either their car or teens’ safety. Skeptics While there are so many obvious benefits to Teen Driver, there are a few who remain skeptical.  Some have considered this technology to be ‘spyware’ and have compared this information to  being as invasive as the NSA. Really. Like with any new product, critiques are welcome and GM is open to hearing them.  They can only improve on what they already have and given this as a jumping point, I’d say the future is looking great.  However, even teens and parents alike have some some constructive concerns and feedback to share. If any of the presets are exceeded, nothing really happens; it simply tells on you. My guess is if your parents are concerned about your safety enough to have a preset key fob for you, they’re also the parents who are going to sit you down and talk about your excessive speeding in their vehicle.  The best way to not be found guilty is to not commit the crime. What kind of teenager is driving a brand new 4-door Chevy Malibu? Valid. Back when I was learning to drive no parent I knew was letting their teen drive their, or any, brand new car.  However, times are different and statistics are staggering.  There is a great deal of parents who care enough about their teenagers and want to ensure their utmost in safety (note: this is not to say my parents, or any back then, didn’t care.  Time, cars and technology were so vastly different even twenty years ago that it almost seems archaic).  Given the level of information we can obtain from our vehicles, doesn’t it just make sense we start using to better our everyday lives and the lives our loved ones? Teen Driver doesn’t address distractions like passengers and cell phones.  True, but if you are purchasing the new 2016 Malibu with Teen Driver, my guess is you are already, or at the very least feel an obligation to be, a responsible parent active in your teen’s life.  Setting a key fob for your teen is probably not the first time you’ve had a conversation with them about car safety and on the off chance it is and are still reading this; do more.  Get involved in your teen’s life. Be an Active Participant Let’s face it, GM and other manufacturers can only do so much.  The best way to teach your teenagers about safe driving is to set the example yourself.  Be cognisant of your behavior while you are driving your children/teens around. Have a conversation involving your entire family about car safety do’s and don’ts.  Sure, your teens are going to call you out on some bad habits you have, but this is a great time to show them how serious you are about safety that even you are willing to change.  (Right, dad?)  Remember, your bad habits are their examples. The demand for onboard functional systems is great but unfortunately, previous and existing types of systems fail to impress car buyers.  According to JD Power, customers complain more about the infotainment system than any other part in the car. Consumers want the technology in their cars to update as quickly as their cell phones do.  Acknowledgment that the smartphone is an essential part of our everyday lives was the first step to solving this problem.  Enter CarPlay. more Your Apple and Android Now Have a Home On Your Interface CarPlay, an Apple product, is described as the smarter safer way to use your phone while in the car.  Plugging your phone into a cord, not the USB, and a screen similar to that on your phone appears on the interface. With buttons and icons large enough to push without being too specific limits the amount of time your eyes are off the road.  Siri is still voice activated and coming along for the ride to help you remain hands free and less distracted. Because of the speed at which smartphones get upgraded is exponentially greater than that of your car’s on board technology, there simply isn’t any way to for manufacturers to compete.  GM, Chevy’s parent company, understands this and has been working with Apple and Android. “Partnering with Apple and Google to offer CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility across the widest range of models in the industry is a great example of how Chevrolet continues to democratize technology that’s important to our customers.” Chevy is the first to offer both Android as well as Apple systems. Simplicity and Flexibility Unlike car systems that forced the customer to learn their particular system which would become outdated almost as quickly as it left the lot, this new interface operates like your cell phone does.  It’s almost exactly the same as the screen on your phone so you’re immediately familiar with how it works. The interface is offered in two screen sizes, one at 7” and the other 8”.  Currently Android users only get the 7” screen to choose from, but that is due to change. Way of the Future Chevy is confidently heading forward with both systems.  “A year or two from now, why wouldn’t you have this?” says Chevy’s director of user experience, Dan Kinney.  Though they don’t expect this system to fully replace OEM (original equipment manufacturer) features like AM/FM radio and climate control won’t be controlled by CarPlay. Like your cell phone, CarPlay or Android Auto needs a connection for use of certain applications and features, like navigation.  There’s also the possibility that something could happen to your phone; damage, breakage, or being lost. Figurative bumps in the road.  However, those who strive to solve these problems are who make this technology available in the first place.  I'm confident it's only a matter of limited time before we see these minor issues resolved.
