The 2016 Chevy Volt marks the second generation for the electric-hybrid car, and is promised to be more satisfying to drive than before. Which is impressive, because as far as electric-hybrid cars go the first generation is already said to be pretty satisfying. With the combination of stunning design and balance of power and efficiency, the 2016 Volt was voted the 2016 Green car of the Year by Green Car Journal. With the addition of a new and improved powertrain, design (inside and out), and efficiency, it only makes sense that the second generation Volt is going to be better than the first. Chevy dealers in KY can expect to see an increase in sales with the way this fresh model looks and performs. Exterior Design The overall dimensions of the Volt have changed with the second generation. It has become 3.3 inches longer, the wheelbase has increased by 0.4 inches, and the roof has become 0.2 inches lower. While these dimensional changes are negligible, the change in curb weight is significant. The nemesis of efficiency is curb weight, and the fact that the curb weight has dropped by 200 pounds shows that the engineers recognized that. The Volt’s fresh redesign is a welcoming addition, and the result is a Volt that looks more rounded and sculpted in the front. It gives the Volt an appearance of being jacked up in the rear, and no longer looks like the other electric cars out there. This more conventional more akin to a regular gas powered sedan, and is sure to attract some attention. Especially by those who wanted an electric car but avoided them because of their outlandish designs. Overall, it’s a much more handsome and sleek design than the first generation. Under this new design, the Volt is still riding on GM’s front-drive Delta II chassis. Even though it’s still sitting on the same chassis, the engineers were able to make the frame structure more stiff. This provides a more stable and secure feeling to the driver when going down the road, which is a nice plus for an electric car. The way the engineers were able to provide a stiffer structure is by dropping the rubber mounts that isolated the front subframe cradle. Even though it feels more solid and secure when going down the road, there is nothing to absorb the noise without those rubber mounts. The new Volt now rides a little louder than before, but a more stable feeling electric car is a fair trade off. Interior Design Inside, the Volt has gotten just as much of a redesign, particularly the touchscreen display. The first generation’s touchscreen is gone, and has been replaced with a new eight-inch informational one. Accompanying this new touchscreen is an array of practically arranged dials, switches, and knobs that make utilizing the features in the cab effortless and more intuitive than before. The finishing inside the cab matches the exterior design: more rich but conventional at the same time. The primary material inside is leather, accompanied by good-quality plastic to fill in the gaps. Chrome accent runs playfully throughout the dashboard, providing an accent that demands attention. As far as seating goes, Chevy managed to squeeze a third “seat” between the two in the back. Something that will warrant very limited use, and make those who get stuck in the center feel like they are being punished. Other than that minor setback, it's a well-done and much needed redesign overall. Performance and Powertrains The 2016 Volt also has a new engine: one of GM’s new 1.5-liter four-cylinder direct injection aluminum block engine. The previous 1.4-liter with 84 horsepower had a better compression ratio, but Chevy decided to go with their new 1.5 aluminum anyway. This is because, much like the frame, the new engine is lighter, 100 pounds lighter to be exact. Even though it’s lighter, it still pushes out 101 horsepower total, 17 more horsepower than the previous model. For Volt users, this is a win-win situation. Consumers who drive the Volt primarily use the electric aspect for transportation, obviously, and many consider the engine to just be dead weight. By providing a more lightweight engine Chevy eliminated both of those problems, while adding to fuel-efficiency. The Volt kept to its first generation roots though, and still uses two electric motors. This time though, there is not a shred of comparison between the first and second generation Voltec powertrains. The first generation used a big and small motor, whereas the second generation uses two that are relatively the same size. This allows these two motors work in unison more efficiently to to optimize and conserve energy, all while providing more power and torque. The combined electrical horsepower sits at 149, and the torque is 294 pound-feet, another upgrade from the last generation. This Volt is quicker than its predecessor, and now accelerates from 0 to 60 in 8.4 seconds. It now gets 41 mpg running on the gas engine and 102 MPGe while using just the electric motor. Battery Things are looking good for the battery; it’s dropped 31 pounds and gone up in energy capacity. Engineers knew that consumers preferred using the electric motors in the Volt, so they focused on creating a new regenerative feature. The “Regen on Demand” allows the driver to engage regenerative braking using a paddle behind the steering wheel. When this mode is engaged, the driver will lift off the gas pedal and the Volt will slow itself down. Allowing you to essentially operate it with one pedal under normal conditions, and letting the Volt capture its own momentum to recharge the battery. Thanks to the new battery capacity, the Volt is now able to drive 53 miles on a full charge without using the gas, and when the battery runs low on energy the Volt will switch over to using the gas engine. At this point, it engages a gas-powered generator that replenishes the battery as you drive. With a full charge and a full tank, the volt now gets a combined range of 420 miles. Safety The Volt is also sporting some impressive safety features for an electric-hybrid car. It features 10 airbags and a sensor that detects 360-degrees, allowing the proper airbags to inflate depending on the severity of the crash. Some other cutting-edge technology available is lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, and forward safety awareness. All designed to help keep you as aware as possible while cruising down the road. Like most Chevy products, the Volt is also accompanied by OnStar and automatic crash response. Allowing OnStar to contact you or send someone when the Volt’s sensors detect a safety feature has been engaged. Not Many Downsides This is one of the few model upgrades that doesn’t have a downside to it, everything has either been upgraded or redesigned for the better. Certainly the increase in powertrains and performance is going to be the main selling point of this electric-hybrid car, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the new look plays an important factor as well. The Volt also sports a new durable and lightweight frame, along with cutting-edge safety technology designed to keep you as safe as possible. Sure, it might be a little bit louder in the cab than the first generation, but I’d rather have a louder drive accompanied by a more protective frame than a quiet ride and weak frame.

Previous Chevy Hybrids The 2013 Silverado 1500 Hybrid Chevy really started making waves in the hybrid market with its 2013 Silverado 1500 hybrid, one of the first work trucks to hold the hybrid title. With a powerful dual-engine powertrain capable of switching between electric, gas, and a combination of the two, this pickup got an incredible 20 miles per gallon city and 23 highway, better than any competitor. This model also featured Chevy’s regenerative braking, meaning that drivers do not need to be near an outlet to charge their hybrid Silverado. The 2013 Tahoe Hybrid That same year, Chevy also released its 2013 Tahoe hybrid, which stormed the SUV market by offering a whopping 21 miles per gallon combined thanks to its twin electric motors and 6.0-liter gasoline V8 engine. This efficient SUV could still provide up to 379 horsepower. This was the sixth year in a row Chevy had released a hybrid Tahoe, and the line saw notable popularity in its time. Engine Options The base trim has a 1.5-liter four-cylinder that is rated at 160 horsepower paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine combined with the reduced weight of the frame will let the Malibu achieve 27 mpg city and 37 highway. Impressive horsepower and fuel economy for a midsize sedan. There will also be a hybrid available using a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a two-motor electric drive, reaching 47 mpg combined. But, if you are more interested in performance and don’t mind sacrificing fuel economy, then you can upgrade to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine putting out 259 horsepower paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Getting an average 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway for an engine that size. The sleek Impala-influenced design of the Malibu is sure to turn some heads as it goes down the road. Motor Trend magazine first debuted all the way back in 1949, and was the first ever publication to honor a vehicle as a "Car of the Year." In order for a vehicle to qualify for the coveted award, the car, truck, or SUV must be completely new, or "substantially upgraded" from the previous model year. In an attempt to keep the award from only going to super cars or luxury high-end models, Motor Trend only considers vehicles that have a starting MSRP of under $100,000. After a vehicle meets the most basic criteria, Motor Trend then subjects each model to a variety of tests, to ensure that the vehicle is up to their expected high standards. Efficiency - Judges the fuel efficiency rating and carbon footprint, while keeping in mind the type of vehicle and its overall purpose. Safety - Active safety features that help the driver avoid a potential collision; secondary safety features that protect passengers when a collision does occur. Value - How competitive the pricing of the vehicle is, and the various trim levels offered, compared to other vehicles in the same segment. Performance of Intended Function - Rates how effectively the vehicle performs the job that its designers, engineers, and planners intended. After their initial evaluation, the judges debate and make a final decision on the winner of that category. 2016 Car of the Year Finalists Just this week, Motor Trend announced its finalists for all three of its competitive categories. Each one of those lists includes at least one Chevrolet model, which gives the Bowtie brand big hopes for what may come for its 2016 lineup.   Last year, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf took home the award for Car of the Year, but this year's winner is still undecided. Like its namesake city, it was fun, youthful and happening. Though the Chevy Malibu was a rear wheel drive vehicle, it offered 300 horsepower in a small block V8 and you wouldn’t have expected it, but the Malibu premiered as a small family sedan. For the times and especially for a family vehicle, it was quite audacious but no one could deny that it was certainly fun to drive. It was also wildly popular. Within its first year, it sold over 200,000 units! Malibu’s Muscle: Chevelle and SS With muscle cars everywhere in the mid to late 60’s, Chevy didn’t want to miss out and introduced the Chevelle and Malibu SS. Becoming legendary for their horsepower, the Malibu was also rising to become Chevy’s premium family sedan. In the Winners Circle The 1970’s Malibu belonged to Nascar. Offering a host of engine choices, from a big block 396 cubic inch V8 to a small block 350, these Malibu’s ended up in Nascar’s winner circle not once, not twice but 25 times. Chevy decided to discontinue the Malibu in 1983 but by the late 1990’s brought back this American classic. Coming In Hot In 1997, the Malibu returned as a brand new car. While it was gone, the American market for sedans had changed. New focuses on safety and image were emerging. During its absence, other sedans were taking its place but the new Malibu showed up and reclaimed its spot as the favorite. Malibu Wins Again! Chevrolet had a lot to be proud of in 1997 as the Malibu was awarded Motor Trend’s Car of the Year. There was no question whether bringing the Malibu back was the right choice. Offering improved technology and efficient performances that improved riding and handling, this new Malibu was up to date and ready for the new millennium. Receiving critical acclaim once again in 2008, the Malibu won the North American Car of the Year award. The 2008 model used a global platform with updates to its exterior including a brand new grill which would become the new face for Chevrolet, as well as two signature rounded tail lights. Malibu’s Moves Forward In 2009, Chevy introduced the Malibu Hybrid. Featuring advanced technology, it boasts a 2.4L ecotec with a 4 cylinder engine and 4-speed manual transmission. Offering other features like keyless entry, automatic climate control and satellite radio, Chevy was reaching a whole new audience. In 2010, the Malibu was GM’s top-selling passenger car at nearly 200,000 units sold. Producing for the global market for the first time in 2013, GM announced the Malibu Eco into the world market. Offering two different engines: a powerful 197 horsepower 2.5L 4-cylinder ecotec engine in a 6-speed automatic transmission and a second even more powerful option at 259 horsepower 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Both engines produce powerful performances and have excellent fuel economy. With all the successes that Chevrolet has encountered with the Malibu from 1964 and since its return to the stage in 1997, it is no wonder that it continues to grow, impress and win with car dealers, shows and audiences.

Recently, your Chevrolet car dealer has something to celebrate with Mr. Rock. You see, it was a Kid Rock song that was the inspiration for the new Chevy Silverado. more Complete with a waving Stars and Stripes featured on the sides of the truck and a very liberal use of chrome, this 3500 HD Silverado is the final outcome of what happens when you have Kid Rock fans designing for Chevrolet. The song: "Born Free". The pickup: Silverado’s full-size 3500 HD. The song, which celebrates freedom and honors American workers, is an homage to the blue-collar folk across this great land who work to keep the American dream alive. Can You Smell What This Rock is Cooking? After taking a visit to the Silverado HD assembly plant in Flint, Michigan, Kid went to meet with the guys who built the truck and who are also members of UAW Local 598, as well as huge Kid Rock fans. He wanted to meet with Chevy’s team of designers and builders before heading back to the design studio so that he could share in the customization of the ‘blue-collar’-inspired pickup. Says Mr. Rock, “ The Flint plant - and everyone on the line - is the backbone of America. I wanted the design for the truck to be bold, but with features and elements that wouldn’t be out of the reach for the working-class guys.” Clearly, the backbone of America as designed and put together by members of UAW Local 598 are also the inspiration for the patriotic motif. Sitting on 22-inch custom wheels, custom chrome grille, tinted windows, chrome assist steps, chrome exhaust pipes, a spray-in bed liner and black metallic-flecked paint, this full-size Silverado 3500 HD sounds big, sturdy and industrial. There are also “Born Free” logos and “Kid Rock” decals placed accordingly around the truck as reminders that his name is Kid. Roooooooooock. And as if the mere presence of the 3500 HD Silverado wasn’t intimidating enough, a giant blackened Chevy bowtie dons the front grill, ready for its closeup. Capturing the Kid Being that Kid Rock, as a recording artist, dabbles in rock, rap, and country, Chevy wanted the interior of the Silverado HD to reflect his expressive styles. None of this would be possible without proper trailering capabilities which with the Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel engine that boasts 397 horsepower and has a massive 795 lb/ft of torque can more than handle. “This truck is all about celebrating the people who build it and the freedom it enables.” concluded Kid Rock. His thoughts about visiting the plant, “ Visiting the Silverado factory was one of the coolest and most meaningful things I’ve done.”

Positive that they’ve produced the best electric hybrid available, the 2016 Volt is almost ready for its debut. Chevrolet car dealers are happy to report that the Volt is not just what we expected, but so much more. Entering its sophomore generation, Chevy is proud to announce the Volt is done with its growing pains. Having been fully redesigned and updated for the 2016 model year, Chevy has listened to every critique and improved everything from rearview mirrors to battery life and electric range. more So what has changed? Everything. The 2016 Volt went through a complete makeover. This new generation Volt has an edge and aggressive appeal. The exterior and interior have been made over in a sleek style with modern amenities that reflect a young, bold attitude. An updated hybrid drive system delivers 53 miles of pure electric energy. New transmission and battery capacity allows the 2016 Volt to travel a 420-mile range on a full charge and full tank of gas which translates to 1000 miles between filling your tank. That is a tremendous amount of savings you now have, thanks to your 2016 Chevy Volt. While the Volt hasn’t yet made its debut at your Chevrolet car dealer location, the anticipation grows and fans can hardly wait. Bigger Engine Just Got Better Chevy has proven that bigger is sometimes better. Adding to 2016 Volt is a slightly larger 1.5L SIDI engine. Being that the previous engine was a 1.4L and had issues with noise, vibration and harshness when operating under gas power, Chevy went with a slightly larger engine which gives the ability to produce the power it needs to run at lower engine speeds. This reduces the noise and vibration. Running on a new generation of engines that were designed to waste less energy, reducing the noise, it can also run on fuel which was a specific request by Volt drivers that Chevy addressed. Best-In-Class The 2016 Volt is more than an improvement from the models of years past but also in comparison with other hybrids currently on the market. Now offering better handling than both the Ford Fusion and the Toyota Prius combined, the updated 2016 Volt gets to 60mph in 8.4 seconds which is faster than the Toyota Prius. While it’s immediately more sporty in appearance than others in its class, reviews say it’s also more fun to drive. After dropping 100 extra pounds from last years' model, it has become lighter with a sportier feel. The lost weight produces a more aggressive throttle that delivers more power leading to a quicker performance. There is no doubt that the 2016 Volt is the best contender in the hybrid segment. Winning Range The 2016 Chevy Volt will be delivering a wider range of miles on both electric and gas power. Chevy promised improvements with mileage and they over delivered. This means that the Volt will be able to travel 53 miles on electric battery alone before it needs to go to the fuel tank for reserves. The Battery Life Let me break this down for you. Every time you get in your 2016 Volt, it will be powered by an electric battery. Should you never need to travel more than 53 miles in single trips, you’ll never been needing to use the gas reserves. How many trips to and from your work is that? Think of how much money you will save by running on 53 miles of electric energy. What will you ever do with your savings? Well, I’m sure you can think of something! Your fully charged battery will get 106 mpge (miles per gallon equivalent). Once the electric power is used up, the gas engine works together with the electric drive system to produce still a more efficient fuel economy. So, even when it’s necessary to use the fuel reserves, you will run on an efficient engine. What’s Your Range? The range on the gasoline-fueled engine gets an EPA combined rating of 42 miles. On average, the Chevy Volt user won’t see a gas station except for around every 1,000 miles or so. Currently, GM predicts about 80% of the 2015 Volt is run on battery.  80% of not using fuel, of not paying for gasoline. That’s also 80% fewer stops to fill your tank on freezing winter days. If you consider that the average Volt driver will be doing most of their driving within a close range of city or town limits, then this is the car that makes the most sense. Think for a minute all of the driving you do in an average day; to and from work, meetings, groceries, kid’s schools, events, sports. Most of this occurs within a lower mile range closer to your home. Driving the Chevy Volt ensures that you’re most likely going to be running solidly on electric energy and saving money by not refueling anywhere near as often as you used to. Overachieving The practicality of producing a vehicle that runs considerably more on electric power than fuel saves time and money at the pumps, but also speaks to a much larger and growing demographic that Chevy is cornering right now. While every manufacturer is producing some kind of hybrid, only Chevy is offering one which has gone through a complete redesign and has produced better results than it even intended. That’s what overachievers do. They out-do and surprise even themselves. Really, isn’t that what you want in a car brand? When Chevy originally set out to update the Volt, they said “50 miles or more” running on electric alone. The 2016 Volt gets 53 miles. When Chevy said set out to improve fuel economy, they said “at least 40 miles”. Just like you guessed, the 2016 Volt now gets 42 miles per gallon. This gives the Volt an efficiency rating of 106 MPGe (MPGe = miles per gallon of equivalent. This measures the distance a car can travel electrically on the same amount of energy as contained in one gallon of gasoline.). Seating for Five While the third row, ‘seven passenger’ is all the buzz in the dominating SUV/crossover segment, the Chevy Volt is highlighting their three-passenger back seat. That’s right, the middle seat is back. Coming equipped with a shoulder strap but sans lap belt and headrest, it does offer an extra seat for the smallest of the bunch. Because the battery is located underneath the middle seat, there is a slight bump up which would actually serve to make the smallest person who is doomed for that spot feel a bit better about their lot in life. Sleek, Confident Style Often when people think ‘hybrid’ they think about a humdrum design with little to frills and perks. That couldn’t be farther from what the redesigned 2016 Volt captures. Said to be inspired by a wind-swept landscape, the sloping roof line offers a sleek sporty look for a hybrid while also improves its aerodynamics. A shutter system is located behind the front grill that automatically closes at highway speeds to reduce drag In an attempt to modernize the interior without minimizing the need for comfort, softer materials, and more spacious seating make it more livable for all family members. A cleaned up center stack is a vast improvement as are the simple knobs and buttons to designate climate control, as well as heated front, passenger, and rear seats. An 8” screen displays the infotainment and Apple’s CarPlay, a first for GM, which when connected to an iPhone allows for hands-free and eyes free texting messaging through the use of Siri. All this adds up to a 40% improvement over last years model.

A lot of attention has been paid to new vehicles offering diesel engine options lately. Unfortunately, a lot of that attention has been negative, after Volkswagen's recent diesel emissions scandal. Other automotive companies have been feeling the heat from VW's mistake, and some are even pulling out of future plans for diesel models. Luckily, Chevrolet Dealerships won't be seeing a decline in future diesel offerings. General Motors has recently been very vocal about their intentions of moving forward with new diesel models. more Two New Diesel Models from GM The Executive Vice President of Global Product Development from General Motors, has recently commented on the possibility of shutting down future diesel powered models. Mark Reuss spoke at a press event last week, saying that both of GM's upcoming diesel models are safe, and will in "No way," be derailed by recent events. Cruze Turbo Diesel The first diesel model expected from GM, is the Chevrolet Cruze Turbo Diesel. This latest Cruze model is set to join the lineup for the 2017 model year, and is expected to build upon the high performance of the current Cruze Diesel model from Chevrolet. Speculation and hype has been building around the newest Cruze Turbo Diesel model, and Reuss played into that hype by announcing that, "The Cruze Diesel is too good not to do it." It is just a matter of time, and a little patience on our part, until the all new 2017 Cruze Turbo Diesel arrives at Chevrolet dealers across the nation. Diesel Engines for Cadillac Cadillac, another automotive brand underneath the General Motors umbrella, is also expected to release upcoming diesel models. Reuss confirmed in his press conference that GM is definitely moving forward with the development of the diesel engines for Cadillac, and expects zero delays in their efforts. Cadillac is looking to bring four and six-cylinder turbo diesels to market, mainly across Europe in the coming years. For Cadillac enthusiasts here in the United States, Reuss says that the new turbo diesel Cadillac models will make it to the United States, but that, "It's a question of timing." Why Diesel? Automotive brands across the world are embracing the use of diesel technology in their vehicles. Diesel engines are growing in popularity for many reasons, and may appeal to customers who value efficiency and cost savings. Though it was only a part of automotive history for one generation between the 2005-2010 model years, it was a solid, affordable, American compact car. As you shop around for a used Chevy vehicle, consider the Chevy Cobalt, particularly from its final 2010 model year. A trio of additional trim levels exists in the form of the XFE, LS, and LT. All 2010 Cobalt trims shared the same drivetrain, with the exception of the performance-driven SS. Equipped with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine, able to generate 155 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque. Standard operation comes from a five-speed manual, but the LS and LT can be paired to the four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for the manually-equipped LS and LT is rated at 25 city, 35 highway, and 29 mpg combined, while the automatic configuration returns 24 city, 33 highway, and 27 mpg combined. But, the XFE, which stands for Extra Fuel Economy, sets the bar even higher, with fuel efficiency topping out at 37 highway mpg. The XFE was able to make the zero to sixty mph mark in 8.5 seconds, which is good for this segment. Most drivers might want to narrow their search for a used or certified pre-owned 2010 Chevy Cobalt to the performance-rated SS model with its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder, which produces 260 horsepower, matched by 260 lb.-ft. of torque, and operated exclusively by a five-speed manual transmission. So equipped, the 2010 Cobalt SS burns the zero to sixty mph dash in a mere 5.8 seconds. Surprisingly enough, despite its enhanced power and performance, the SS retains satisfactory fuel efficiency ratings at 22 city, 30 highway, and 25 mpg combined. Consider the sport-tuned suspension, sunroof, Brembo front brakes, specially sport-tuned suspension, performance tires wrapped around 18-inch wheels, sport seats made from a suede type fabric, Bluetooth capability, high-end Pioneer sound system, a turbo boost gauge, and SS-specific stylings on both the inside and outside. Sport pedals and a limited-slip front differential are both available options. Unfortunately, the backseat doesn't offer much in the way of room and comfort, so the 2010 Chevy Cobalt could be just the thing for a solo or two-person commuter vehicle. The ride is reportedly very smooth and supportive of a hushed cabin. According to reviewers at Edmunds, the 2010 Cobalt SS trim level is almost on par with their favored Mazdaspeed 3 for its athleticism, smooth acceleration, and overall performance. Originally priced to start at $14,990 and ranging upwards of $24,500, you can now found a used or certified pre-owned 2010 Chevy Cobalt for an average price listed between $7,962 and $12,738, according to U.S. News & World Report's Best Car rankings.
