There are a lot of used Chevy trucks for sale out there. Whether they are in a dealer’s lot or on the side of the road, they still should be inspected. Even if it isn’t a truck, you shouldn't just blindly buy a used vehicle. The dealers will be more than happy to answer your questions, and if you end up irritating a private seller by asking a questions; chances are it’s because they don’t have a proper answer. Therefore, on top of asking questions about the used truck you want to buy, it’s also important to inspect it. It doesn’t need to be the thorough investigation. After all, it’s a used truck, so chance are you just need it to get you from point A to point B reliably and safely. With that being said, here’s three important things to look for when trying to find that perfect used Chevy truck. If you see any of these things, they are warning signs that the truck is either the end of it’s life-span, or it will be extremely expensive to keep it alive. Is There any Rust? On used used trucks, there is almost always bound to be rust. It might happen more so in the North as opposed to the South — because of roads being treated regularly with salt in the winter — but that doesn’t mean the cars down here are exempt from getting rusty. Anyway, a little surface rust underneath the frame is okay, and expected, on a used Chevy truck. However, if it gets to the point where the rust has eaten a hole away in the body/undercarriage, then don’t think twice about leaving that truck behind. Why? Because at that point, there is no saving the truck. If it has that much rust, it can only get worse. If the rust is that bad on a truck, there is no saving it. Therefore, this should be the first thing you look for. Look for really bad rust on the quarter panels and on the sides of the truck by the running boards (or if there aren’t any running boards, then look where they would be). If the rust has eaten through the body there, this is an indicator that underneath the truck is going to be in even worse shape. Inspect the Engine This should be self explanatory, but you need to check the engine. If you ask to start the truck up and the owner says no, leave it alone. Chances are, there’s something wrong with the engine, and that’s why they don’t want you to start it up. First, do a visual check. Look around the engine/the block and see if it’s wet. This, along with the sign of built-up grimy debris, means that there could be an oil/other fluid leak somewhere, and that it wasn’t well cared for. Along with looking at the engine while the truck is off, it’s also important to visually check it when it’s running. After you turn it on, let it idle and warm up a bit. There should be absolutely no smoke coming from the engine, and if there is, that’s the sign of an oil leak. Furthermore, you need to listen for any strange noises such as rapping, knocking, or clanking; these all indicate a much more serious issue. After inspecting for rust, you need to check out the engine. Ignore the lift-kit and cool paint job — or whatever else might appeal to you — and inspect the engine thoroughly. If you don’t or buy the vehicle anyway, then chances are you will be paying for repairs that are more expensive than the price you paid for the truck. Mileage Finally, check the mileage when you get inside to start the truck up. The mileage on a truck, especially a used one, is important. Even if you have checked the engine and body for rust and they look okay, but the mileage is sitting at 250,000, then walk away. At that point, it becomes a better safe than sorry situation. If it was well taken care of over it’s lifetime, you probably don’t have anything to worry about. However, unless you really know what you are looking for there is no way for you to have that guarantee. These are the 3 of the more important things to look for when buying a used Chevy truck, and you need to make sure that you inspect these. Everyone dreams of being a celebrity, but have you ever thought of driving in a celebrity? That may have sounded a bit odd. We're referring to the Chevrolet Celebrity, a mid-size car that was available through much of the 1980s. While you may have never heard of the nameplate, the vehicle was actually a hit back in its heyday, actually leading all vehicles in United States sales in 1986. Let's take a step back in time and remember the Celebrity. Who knows, when you're finishing reading, you may be inclined to pursue the vehicle at a Kentucky Chevrolet dealer... more Despite only lasting for only one generation, the Chevy Celebrity saw several facelifts over its nine-year run, including revamps in 1984, 1986 and 1987. The vehicle initially made its debut as a smaller coupe, but the designation was eventually switched to mid-size coupe. A station wagon option was also available. The original Chevy Celebrity debuted in 1981 (as a 1982 model), but the name had previously been by used by General Motors as an option for a 1960s Oldsmobile sedan. The new Celebrity was based on the front-wheel drive A-body style previously featured in the Buick Century, Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser, and the Pontiac 6000. There were two engine options for the original Celebrity - a tech IV 2.5-liter TBI I4 and a powerful fuel-injected 2.8-liter V6 - and both were coupled with an automatic transmission. A five-speed manual transmission option was briefly offered, but it was eventually discarded. A 4.3-liter Diesel V6 was eventually included as an option, and the unit eventually gained praise from both critics and customers. Besides the range, the Bolt's engine is still a rather impressive unit. The electric motor can pump out 200 horsepower and 266 pounds-feet of torque, and when teamed up with the 7.05:1 final drive ratio, owners can expect a 0-to-60 time of fewer than seven seconds. Meanwhile, the 960-pound nickel-rich lithium-ion battery can hold 60 kWh of energy. These mechanics are accompanied by a 7.2 kW charger, allowing you to regularly charge your vehicle via a 240-volt wall box. Richard notes that owners can expect at least 50 miles from a two-hour charge, and when using the optional DC Fast Charging technology, you can expect 90 miles from only a 30-minute charge. “You usually have a battery cell that delivers either the desired levels of energy or power, but not traditionally both. With this cell design and chemistry we were able to deliver a battery system with 160 kilowatts of peak power and 60 kilowatts hours of energy,” said Gregory Smith, the group manager of Bolt EV battery pack engineering. It's not all about the engine, as the engineers have also revamped their vehicle's drivability to cater to the electric unit. Richard describes how many electric car drivers will end up relying on a single pedal, as "lifting your foot off the accelerator engages the regenerative braking which slows down the car without the need for brakes." The Bolt will embrace this type of driving strategy, as drivers can expect their electric vehicle to decelerate with a simple removal of the foot. "When operating the Bolt EV in “Low” mode, or by holding the Regen on Demand paddle located on the back of the steering wheel, the driver can bring the vehicle to a complete stop under most circumstances by simply lifting their foot off the accelerator, although the system does not relieve the need to use the brake pedal altogether," a press release (via Richards) said. Electric cars have been around as long as gas cars; in fact, some of the earliest cars ever produced were all-electric, and after decades of rising and falling interest, it seems as though electric vehicles are finally starting to gain some real footing in the auto market. For some automakers, like Chevrolet, electric vehicles are nothing new. In fact, Chevy has been working on electric vehicles for decades and is continuing that legacy with new electric vehicles introduced every year. Here’s a quick rundown on Chevy’s work with electric vehicles, and a quick look into where they plan to take this technology in the future. Benefits of Electric Cars Contact Us GM EV1 After nearly a century of gas-powered dominance in the automotive world, nobody had a decent electric car. The average consumer couldn’t get the high-tech electric concepts that automakers were developing for trade shows, and automakers weren’t providing a mass-produced electric model that was affordable to the general public – until GM, that is. In 1996, GM unveiled its EV1 model: an all-electric vehicle designed to take the average consumer around town without using a drop of gas. The EV1 Was only available in select cities with limited lease-only agreements. They were not available to the general public and could only be serviced at certain Saturn dealerships. However, with a high cost to build and not enough widespread interest to fuel further sales (the EV1 was lease-only), GM decided to discontinue the line, even going so far as to repossess and crush most of the EV1s on the road – despite consumer protest. Currently, only one intact EV1 survives at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C, with other disabled models scattered worldwide. This groundbreaking vehicle only paved the way for the future of electric vehicles at GM and at Chevy, including one truck model directly based on the EV1. Chevrolet S-10 EV With Pandora’s box of electric vehicles now opened, several automakers decided to jump into the electric vehicle game, including Chevrolet. With the introduction of its S-10 EV, marketed toward utility fleet customers, Chevy broke the mold of what a pickup could be. Featuring an all-electric drive, the S-10 EV could travel up to 60 miles on a single electric charge and could reach speeds up to 70 miles per hour – just 10 mph less than the GM EV1. Chevrolet, however, actually opened this electric truck up for sale, not just lease, and managed to sell off about 60 of the S-10 EV trucks to fleet customers – meaning several of these trucks still survive on the road today. Unfortunately, Chevy decided to scrap the S-10 EV for many of the same reasons that GM scrapped the EV1, and so many of the unsold models were similarly crushed and scrapped. The S-10 EV would be the last commercially available electric car from Chevy for almost two decades. Chevrolet Mi-Ray After the “death” of the electric car in the mid-90s, consumers were not sold on the all-electric concept. With rising gas prices, however, more and more drivers were looking toward hybrid technology to combine the reliable performance of a gas engine with the emission-free efficiency of electric. For a while, many companies made models that used hybrid drivetrains to balance performance and efficiency. Chevrolet experimented with hybrid SUVs, including the Tahoe and Silverado in 2013, but these met with limited success in sales. It wasn’t until Chevy took on a new strategy that things seemed to click. See the Chevrolet Mi-Ray, a concept vehicle first unveiled at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show that would set a precedent for how Chevy would build the successful hybrid models of today. The Mi-Ray, with dual front-mounted 15-kW electric motors powered by a 1.6-kWh lithium-ion battery charged through regenerative braking, could power its front wheel using only electric power. This meant that drivers could take the Mi-Ray around the city using only front-wheel drive and not use a drop of gasoline – a revolution in driver-selectable efficiency that made the Mi-Ray essentially an electric car or hybrid car on demand. Chevy Malibu and Chevy Volt Chevy would take this same idea and apply it to future hybrid models – with notable success. The 2016 Chevy Malibu comes with a hybrid drivetrain that can power the Malibu up to 55 miles per hour before the gas engine kicks in.
