Embarking on the journey of purchasing a vehicle, whether brand new or used, should be done with thoughtful planning and execution. Explore below, and read some of the tips we give our customers before showing them around our inventory of used cars. Already confident in your purchasing decision, and have in mind exactly what you are looking for? Great! Scroll down and check out some of the Chevrolet cars, trucks, and SUVs, that have proven to hold their value over the years, making for exceptional pre-owned vehicles. Do Your Homework Purchasing a pre-owned vehicle can be nerve-wracking. The thought of the unknown can make some buyers uneasy - and for good reason. Fortunately, here at Dan Cummins Chevrolet, we have spent countless hours with each vehicle we sell, before it ever even comes to our lot. Go through our checklist below to help you decide which vehicle may be the best one for you. Know What You Want. Are you looking for a car? A pickup truck? An SUV? In today’s automotive market, there are more vehicle segments than ever before. An SUV no longer immediately means “gas-guzzler,” and a sedan can sometimes have more interior room than a compact crossover. When purchasing a car, it is important to narrow down what segment you are looking to purchase in. Write Down Your Must-Haves. Create a list of “must-haves” for your vehicle. If exterior color is important, write that down. If safety is a top priority, make it known. Some drivers want power windows and locks, while others are happy with the manual alternative. Think carefully about what is important to you in a vehicle, and create a list. Research Your Options. Once you have the vehicle you want in mind, and the features you are insistent on having, head online to do some research. Websites like CarandDriver.com, KBB.com, and Edmunds.com - are all great free resources to take advantage of. From your research, you should be able to narrow down your search to a few vehicles that you want to focus your attention on. Choose a Dealership. Picking from a Google search of “Lexington used car dealers” can leave you even more confused when you started. Choosing a dealership based solely on rock-bottom prices, can leave you burned in the long run. Start on reputable sites like DealerRater.com, and look up reviews for a dealership. Dealerships that are reputable should have mostly good reviews, and plenty of them. A dealership that has only a handful of reviews may not be as legitimate. It is also important to note how long they have been in business. Dealerships that have been around for a long time, are still around for a reason. Explore your options, and choose the one that is right for you. Know Your Budget. Have a realistic spending goal for your new-to-you car. You don’t want to overexert yourself, or end up buying a car you aren’t happy with. Find a number you are comfortable with, and plan to stick to it. Whether you end up being flexible when it comes down to signing on the dotted line is up to you, but having an initial number in mind is imperative to the process. Be Aware of Costs Down the Road. Call your insurance agent, and let them know the car you have in mind. Get a quote for what insurance will cost you, and consider that when making used-car purchase. If saving money at the pump is important, also be sure to choose a vehicle that has a good EPA fuel economy rating. Another financial impact to consider is warranty information. If a dealer does not offer a warranty on a used car, be sure to plan for maintenance and potential costs down the road. Plan to find out as much information as you can prior to making a vehicle purchase. Knowing what you ultimately want, will give you the confidence to drive off the lot with your new car, without any regrets. Latest on 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1
The Chevy Camaro ZL1 has hit the ground running since it made it's debut back in 2011. Including a supercharged engine, improved power (assisted by innovative technology), and some track-ready features, the supercar was generally regarded as one of the best on the market. It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that many car enthusiasts are anticipating the release of the 2017 model, which could be one of the most impressive cars on the market. There hasn't been much news on the car, but John Halas and the team at CarScoops.com got their hands on some exclusive photos of the vehicle. Before you head out to your local Lexington Chevrolet dealership, see why you may want to wait for the 2017 ZL1... more Sure, the pictures don't reveal a whole lot about the vehicle's "styling details," but that doesn't mean the CarScoops report doesn't give us anything. As Halas writes, we can clearly see a large heat extractor, and the inclusion of such a part would make plenty of sense. After all, a similar part is included on the Corvette Z06 and the Cadillac CTS-V, and both of those car's use a similar LT4 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine. Because of these assumptions, Halas took some liberties when it came to projecting the vehicle's specs. The Z06 produces 650 horsepower and 650 ft-lbs of torque, while the Z06 can pump out 640 horsepower and 630 ft-lbs of torque. Even if the ZL1's numbers fall somewhere in that range, it would still be an upgrade over the 5th generation model, which delivered 580 horsepower and 550 ft-lbs of torque. There's a variety of other assumed specs/features that Halas throws out there, including a reduced curb weight (which, based on the regular Camaro 6, should be down around 200 pounds), a revamped suspension and brake bits, and a "more aggressive body kit." The writer refers to the spy photos for this latter projection, noting that the car "seemed more complete than others did, sporting wider rocket panels, a bigger fixed rear wing, a deep front splitter and possibly blistered fenders to make space for the wider tires." Unfortunately, potential buyers are going to have to wait a couple of months before they can get their hands on Chevy's new car. The 2017 ZL1 is expected to be released following the launch of the 2016 Camaro Convertible, which is expected to hit the market next spring. The ZL1 should debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, so that's certainly something to look forward to. In the meantime, head down to Dan Cummins Chevrolet and check out their selection of Camaros. You won't drive away in a 2017 ZL1, but you'll still find the perfect car for you.

Malibu Hits 10M Sales Mark, Plus A Look Back
The Chevrolet Malibu first rolled off the assembly line back in 1964, and despite a brief hiatus - the iconic mid-size car just hit an impressive milestone. Whether brand new, or buying from used car dealers in Lexington, KY - the Chevrolet Malibu is certainly standing up to the test of time. It has been 51 years since Chevrolet’s very first midsize car was produced, and while it may technically be “over the hill,” the Malibu is holding strong. Just this week, Chevrolet announced that ten million Malibu sedans are currently on the road today. The impressive number doesn’t just mean that Chevy has sold a lot of sedans - it means that the Malibu now exists within a unique context of automotive history. more While it may have been over 50 years since the first Malibu was sold, the sedan took more than a decade off in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The 10 million sales mark came at the perfect time for the automotive giant - who just started production on the all-new 2016 Malibu. In honor of this incredibly impressive milestone, and the ninth-generation of the iconic sedan - let’s take a look back at everything the Malibu has offered over the past 51 years. First Generation: 1964-1967 Originally created to serve as a sub-series to the Chevrolet Chevelle, the Malibu was top-of the line in every way. Offered in multiple variations including a two door sport coupe, four-door sedan, two seat station wagon, and a convertible - the original Chevy Malibu was capable of fitting into every lifestyle. Upscale amenities were present throughout the lush interior cabin, including a deluxe steering column, vinyl upholstery, and deep twist carpeting. In 1967, Chevrolet offered the Malibu with a premium stereo system and 8-track tape player. A new wood grain exterior also made an appearance, and the V8 models could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 6.2 seconds. Second Generation: 1968-1972 Along with the Chevelle, Chevy completely restyled the Malibu for the 1968 model year. A new instrument panel, and a Concours luxury package gave drivers the option for ultimate luxury. A brand new 5.0 liter V8 engine replaced the 4.6 liter V8 that disappeared with the outgoing model year. Throughout this generation, the Malibu also received various styling updates such as revised grilles, taillights, and rear decks. In 1972, Chevy offered the Malibu as a hardtop and convertible for the last time. Third Generation: 1973-1977 An interesting generation for the iconic sedan - the Malibu’s third generation included a complete redesign for 1973. Offered in three different trim levels including the base Chevelle Deluxe, the mid-range Malibu, and the top of the line Laguna. For 1974, the Deluxe model was dropped, making the Malibu the entry level Chevelle model. In 1977, the Malibu Classic became the nameplate’s high-end trim level offering, and featured a four square headlight arrangement that was completely unique and unusual. Fourth Generation: 1978-1983 Up until the 1978 model year, the Malibu was sold under the Chevelle name. Now the bestselling badge in the lineup, the name “Malibu” completely replaced “Chevelle.” Along with the new badging, came an entirely new Malibu. Over a foot shorter than the outgoing model, the all-new Malibu shed up to 1,000 pounds overall, and offered increased head room, leg room, and trunk space. The Malibu and Malibu Classic were the only two trim levels offered, and Chevrolet introduced a new V6 family of engines for the new sedan. Available in three body styles, drivers were able to choose from a station wagon, coupe, or sedan. The new Malibu was widely used in NASCAR, and even used as part of Iraqi’s fleet of government vehicles. After the 1983 model year, Chevrolet and General Motors would not produce a new Malibu for over ten years. Fifth Generation: 1997-2003 The Malibu made a strong comeback in 1997, with an all-new front-wheel drive model introduced to the American public. The Malibu’s comeback was so strong, that Motor Trend magazine named the midsize sedan its Car of the Year for 1997. From 1997-1999, the Malibu featured a 3.1 liter V6 with 155 horsepower. The 2004-2005 Malibu was offered with a more environmentally-friendly 2.2-liter Ecotec I4 engine that still managed to boast 144 horsepower. Sixth Generation: 2004-2007 This newest generation of Chevrolet’s Malibu was moved to the Epsilon platform based on the 2002 Opel Vectra. Available in only two body styles, drivers could choose from a four-door sedan, or a five-door Malibu Maxx station wagon. The Malibu Maxx was Chevrolet’s first attempt at a hatchback since the 1980s. Drivers who wanted more power and a sportier drive, could opt for a special SS trim on either Malibu body styles. This high-end option featured 240 horsepower, 18-inch alloy wheels, a three-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, chrome instruments, and upscale accents throughout the cabin. Seventh Generation: 2008-2012 A brand new design team was brought in for the seventh generation Malibu. Offered in five different trim levels, the 2008 Malibu was even available as a hybrid option. OnStar was included on every seventh generation Malibu, as well as six airbags, traction control, anti lock brakes, daytime running lights, and an electronic tire pressure monitoring system. For 2011, the Malibu included Bluetooth technology, USB ports, remote start, and a security alarm - all standard. These advanced technologies were just starting to surface in the automotive industry, and the Chevrolet was using the Malibu to help lead other automotive manufacturers in a new standard for in-vehicle technology. Eighth Generation: 2013-2015 Debuting in 2012, the all-new Malibu was a global vehicle, and was offered in over 100 markets across the world. The 2012 Malibu was available in various trim levels, and even included an ECO option, for drivers who were environmentally conscious. Nearly all Malibu models came standard with a large touch screen infotainment center with Chevrolet’s MyLink and Pandora. Four cylinder engines were all paired with standard six-speed automatic transmissions, and a 2.0-liter diesel engine was also available. 18 months after the 2013 model debuted, Chevrolet refreshed the Malibu to match that of the redesigned Impala, and Traverse. Ninth Generation: 2016 Back in April of this year, Chevrolet unveiled the all-new 2016 Malibu at the New York International Auto Show. The brand new Malibu begins production this week, and is slated to hit dealer showrooms late fall. Drivers can expect larger interior room, increased fuel economy, and four trim level options. A Malibu Hybrid will also accompany the release, and will feature a 1.8 liter four cylinder engine, and an 80-cell 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. The all-new Ecotec 1.5 liter turbo engine will come standard on the 2016 Malibu, while a 2.0 liter turbo engine will be optional. Advanced safely features, unparalleled in-vehicle technology, and a first-ever teen driver feature, will all be available on the newest Chevy Malibu. Best Used Midsize Sedan on the Road Over 51 years, nine generations, countless improvements, and impressive sales numbers - the Chevy Malibu remains one of the most iconic midsize sedans ever produced. With over ten million sold and still on the road today, the Chevy Malibu is one of the best options for drivers who are looking at purchasing a used midsize car. 2016 Camaro: Start Building Yours
If you identify with the horde of other Camaro fans and you are ever so patiently waiting for the new 2016 Camaro to be released, well....keep waiting. Its just not quite ready. Even Lexington Chevrolet dealers don’t have them yet. But Wait! Chevy is satiating your appetite with a starter. Currently, you can go to Chevy’s website and start building your very own 2016 Camaro. Focusing on aesthetics and superficial items like paint color, interior treatments, wheel options and some stripe packages are about all Chevy is willing to offer to this very excited audience as of now. more It seems that playing hard to get is a favorite pastime of Chevy’s. Ahem, Chevy, we’ve been down this road with you before. It’s a bit late to be so coy, isn’t it? Trims Chevy has outlined for us, the trim levels: 1LT, 2LT, 1SS and ...you guessed it, 2SS. From what we already know about the SS, it will come with a V8, but what we don’t know is what the engine will look like in the other trim levels. Offering both a Turbo and V6, will these be brand specific? Powertrain Lineup The 2.0L Turbocharged engine will give you 275 horsepower and 295 lb/ft of torque which may be quite enough for the novice Camaro driver, but waiting as patiently as you have been you’re going to want something a little more powerful. The 3.6L V6 provides plenty of punch with 335 horsies and 284 lb/ft of torque. Using Direct Injection and Variable Valve Timing on an 8 speed automatic with Active Fuel Management takes this experience to another level. Should you feel like this Camaro just isn’t bitchin’ enough, the top drawer V8 should suffice. At 6.2L with both horsepower and torque coming in at 455, the highly reputable LT1 V8 small block engine brings to life the most powerful Camaro SS ever. Drop Top The 2016 will now offer a convertible coupe with a drop top that won’t make you stop the car to lower it. Using the new electronic key fob, the non-stop drop top will allow you to lower your top at top speeds of 30 mph. See the sun starting to peek through those clouds, all it takes is the push of a button and you’re on your way to feeling that sunshine and open sky above you. Drive Modes With a variety of drive modes offered on the 2016 Camaro, there won’t be a seasoned route, weathered highway or back road that will be too much. Sport, Tour, Ice/Snow, alter traction control, ride stiffness, shift feel, throttle, exhaust and steering offer individually distinctive driving experiences.
Chevy’s Spark Wins 5-Year Cost to Own Award
For the second year in a row, Chevy’s Spark wins Kelley Blue Book’s 5-Year Cost to Own Award. As Chevy ventured into the subcompact car category by producing the Spark which is both their smallest and least expensive vehicle offered, winning the 5 Year Cost to Own award proves Chevy's earned their place in this segment as well. more 5-Year Cost to Own Every year, Kelley Blue Book gives awards out in a variety of categories. This year, they named the 2015 Chevy Spark 'The 5-Year Cost to Own' award. But what exactly does that mean? After measuring the affordability of each car in the subcompact segment, KBB found the 2015 Chevy Spark to be the most cost efficient, and for the second year in a row. Over the course of five years, they've gathered that owning a Chevy Spark will cost roughly $26,905. Check your your Lexington KY Chevrolet to see how well you fit in. Quality and Value Wining this already frugal segment really showcases the quality and value in the 2015 Spark has to offer. Starting with an initial low cost of $13,000 the Spark continues to impress not only with pricing but also in fuel economy and design. Offering an impressive 39 mpg, the Spark will take you far. Though its not likely to win you over when highway driving, its subcompact size and vibrant coloring make it easy to celebrate all this car has going for it. Subcompact Even as a subcompact car, this four door hatchback isn’t necessarily ideal for highways, but because of its fuel economy and size it is perfectly suitable for a younger generation, or for those living in urban dwellings. Its compact size is completely perfect for tight parking spots and quick maneuverability in smaller roadways and alleys. The interior is surprisingly larger than expected and with such modern amenities like 7” touchscreen, wifi hotspot and bluetooth recognition with voice recognition for hands free calling. The center console is both modern and functional with nothing overwhelming and fits its size. Blue ambient back lighting adds a soft glow that is both fresh and a bit funky. Thanks to the tall roofline that provides plenty of headroom. the Spark appears to be more than sufficient in passenger room. Even the back seats fold down to reveal more available cargo space this compact Chevy has a lot of bangs for its buck. Easy Win As we see urban landscapes becoming more dense and the SUV segment dominating sales, its nice to know that manufacturers are still considering that there are other drivers who want compact cars and don’t want to pay a ton for them. Kelley Blue Book’s rating of the Chevy Spark proves that owning this car is an easy win for your finances and lifestyle.
Why Used EVs and Hybrids Are Not Retaining Value
Let's be honest for a moment. If you're seeking a used car, there's a good chance that you're going this route based on your finances. Unless you're a car enthusiast who is obsessed with owning the latest car, this actually isn't a bad route to head down. If you've ever been worried by the future of the automobile industry and how electric cars will impact the used car market, there's no reason to fret. As Jim Gorzelany of Forbes.com writes, while used car prices are typically rising across the board, electric vehicles are going the opposite direction. So why are all the cars you see featured on the lots of Lexington used car dealerships retaining their value better than electric cars? Read on to find out… more As the writer explains, logic would suggest that only collectible, antique cars rise in value as the years go on. However, according to a report by Edmunds.com, used car prices jumped 7.6-percent in the second quarter of 2015, resulting in an all-time high average price of $18,800. You'd reasonably predict that all of the used cars on the market would see an uptick in value, right? Not so fast. Electric vehicles have actually been trending the other way, as the NADA Used Car Guide's Electric Vehicle Retention Report Card suggests that trade-in values for two-year-old hybrids and plug-ins have been dramatically dropping in price over the past couple of months. The cheapest of the analyzed electric cars only retained about 20-percent of their original price. This isn't excellent news for the car industry, but it's a positive for the customers. Gorzelany looked at 2013, sub-22,000-mile electric vehicles (like the Nissan Leaf and Ford Focus Electric), finding that the cars sell for as little as $10,000. This is an absolute bargain, especially when you consider the amount of gas money an electric vehicle could save you. For example, the Leaf can expect to deliver an 84-mile range on a full charge, which should be more than enough to get you to and from work. “Used EV demand continues to be hampered by range and technology concerns,” according to the NADA Used Car Guide’s report (via Gorzelany). “Many three-year-old EVs are now nearing or already to the point where they are no longer covered by their respective manufacturer’s basic warranty due to age or mileage accrual, a potential concern since an extra layer of risk is being added into the mix when used EV buyers are shopping for vehicles.” Of course, the writer warns that this may just be a temporary trend. As gas prices continue to sit in the two dollar range, it reduces the need for electric vehicles. As gas prices rise (and electric vehicles become more prominent), we can expect to see the prices of these used electric vehicles increase. Unfortunately, purchasing an electric car doesn't make sense for everybody. There currently aren't a variety of charging stations, and unless you live in California, it's unlikely that you'll get to drive your electric vehicle very often. Either way, it's a positive for those that are in the market for a hybrid. While you may not be able to find these cars at Dan Cummins dealership, you'll still come across an assortment of suitable vehicles. Head down there today and see what they've got available!
The Disadvantages of Virtual Used-Car Dealers
We've seen plenty of industries slowly transitioning into the world of the internet. Book sellers are quickly become obsolete as digital marketplaces continue to boom. We've seen the demise of the video store, and Amazon has already started to steal customers from large department stores. One industry that wouldn't work online is the car-buying industry, as seeing and driving a physical car goes a long way when someone is determining whether they should purchase a particular vehicle. The sentiment may be very accurate, but that hasn't prevented the industry from switching to the internet. Start-ups like Shift and Vroom have been picking up steam recently, but do they really make the process easier? Keep on reading to figure out why it may be better to get off of your computer and visit your local Lexington used car dealerships … more For someone who isn't familiar with cars, a move to the internet would seem to make sense. As Jerry Hirsch of the Los Angeles Times writes, these online car sellers provide "a virtual showroom," while handling much of their marketing and legal paperwork online. Potential buyers are assured the best prices, and they're even offered full refunds if they ultimately decide that they don't like their purchase. As Hirsch notes, consumers are embracing convenience, as an Accenture survey showed that 75% of respondents "would consider making car selection, financing, price negotiation, back office paper and home delivery completely online." Beepi has certainly looked to avoid the inconvenience that accompanies shopping for a car. Potential buyers can look through a variety of exterior and interior photos while also reading vehicle history and condition reports. As Hirsch explains, once a buyer target a particular car, they have the option to pay "with a personal or cashier's check, a bank wire transfer, a loan through Beepi or finance the car using up to five credit cards." If they wanted, potential buyers can even pay with Bitcoin. These buyers also don't have to worry about the risks that accompany online purchases. Beepi inspects each car that comes their way, conducting a "two-hour, 185-point vehicle inspection and photo session." Once a car has been given a thumbs up, it's assigned a price and listed on the website, with the seller being guaranteed that their car will be sold within 30 days (or the company would personally purchase the car). This would seem like an incentive for those looking to get rid of their vehicles, as it offers a speedier and more convenient process. Typically, these car sellers would be looking to trade in their car, or they'd try to sell it via Craigslist or Autotrader. Now, a company is offering to do all the work for you. How does this work out for these online businesses? They're able to sell the cars for lower prices because they don't have to account for many of the financial variables that go into a typical car price, like paying general managers, finance managers and sales staff. As Hirsch writes, the typical dealership will spend around $2,000 for each used car they're looking to sell, while these online dealerships can deduct that from their price. They've been relatively successful, too. Carvana, one of the start-up companies, finished with $5 million in revenue during their first year. This jumped to $40 million last year, and they're expected to increase to $120 million this year. Despite this early success, Brian Maas, the president of the California New Car Dealers Association, told Hirsch that the sales won't last. Maas says that there's currently a shortage in late-model used cars, and these online marketplaces offer a variety of options at reasonable prices. As the auto industry continues to grow (with between 16 million and 17 millions cars being solid annually), so will the selection of "attractive" used cars. While these websites and apps may have a current advantage, it won't take long for a typical dealership to catch up. "That's going to make it harder for these new entrants," Maas said. It's safe to assume that these virtual car dealers will stick around for the foreseeable future, even if their current popularity drops a bit. The advantages of shopping online are obvious (more convenience, less hassle, unlimited flexibility), but it's important that consumers also understand the negatives that accompany such a purchase. One of the most important aspects of car buying is actually getting behind the wheel of a car and giving it a short ride. You can determine whether you're comfortable in the car, whether you're able to see out of all the windows, and whether you're content with the power and speed. Sure, some of these startups offer some protection if you're not happy with your selection, but this inconvenience could be completely avoided had you driven the car in the first place. Financially, you may have more issues acquiring a vehicle online. While these companies offer a variety of payment options, they're not nearly as flexible as dealerships, especially when it comes to financing a vehicle. It's always suggested that you should opt for your preferred lender when you're looking to secure a loan, whether at a dealership or online. Often, this isn't an option when you're shopping on a virtual marketplace, and you may regret your financing decision. When it comes down to it, it's not worth sacrificing your financial flexibility for an extra bit of convenience. Well, buying online means you get a break on taxes, right? That's incorrect, as both buyers and sellers need to pay taxes after using a virtual marketplace. Failing to pay these taxes could result in a hefty fine from the government, so make sure you understand what you're getting into. These virtual car dealers won't be able to get their hands on new vehicle, as many state laws prohibit companies from retailing new cars. This will be a relief to dealerships across the country. Not only do they get to continue dominating the new-car market, but it also means that these start ups shouldn't be able to top the earning power of a typical, individual dealership. Sure, these websites and apps are very convenient. Isn't it nice to do all your shopping from the comfort of your living room, wearing your pajamas and watching television? There's certainly a demographic that prioritizes these qualities when they're looking to shop. However, it's important to understand that these new advantages means you'll face some negatives elsewhere. From a financial standpoint, it's safer to opt for your typical dealership. Whether it's the ability to use your own financiers or maybe buy a more advantageous warranty, there's no doubt that you have more security when buying from a dealership. Furthermore, if you happen to run into a jam with your vehicle, you know who you can refer to. When it comes down to it, it's safer to buy directly from a dealership. Sure, you may be flushing your day down the drain, and you may find yourself with some unneeded stress. When you consider the pros and the cons, however, there's a lot less risk when you avoid shopping online. So, if you are interest in purchasing a used vehicle, head down to Dan Cummins dealership in Paris, Kentucky. Sure, you'll have to put on shoes and pants, but you can be assured that the helpful staff will find the perfect used car for you.
