I'm sure you've seen the various terminologies when you're searching for what you consider a 'used car.' There's, of course, the generic 'used car' listing, but you'll also probably see advertisements for 'certified pre-owned cars.' Well there can't be much of a difference between the two, right? In some cases, you'd be correct, but most of the time, that thinking would be completely off. The main difference is in the quality of the car, which you'll read about more after the break. If you're seeking a non-new car, read the post below to get a better understanding of the differences between 'used' and a 'CPO.' Often considered a cheaper alternative to new cars, a certified pre-owner vehicle has been completely inspected prior to it's reselling, assuring that all damaged parts are fixed and everything is working properly. According to Joe Tralongo of AutoTrader.com, a car usually has to meet specific criteria before it can even be considered, including possessing a low mileage (no more than 60,000 to 80,000 miles) and low age (often five to seven years old). Each automaker relies on a different set of standards when determining whether a used car is qualified, and because of this thorough examination, Tralongo says you're assured that a CPO is "going to be the highest quality used car to begin with." The dealer has to ultimately sign off on the vehicle (relying on the manufacturer's "specifications and requirements"), and the car is then put through an extensive "multi-point inspection," assuring that everything is in top-top shape. The manufacturer will then often include an extended warranty, a bumper-to-bumper warranty or a variety of other incentives. As Tralongo notes, these "added incentives" could include roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement (in case of emergency) and free oil changes. Since your purchased vehicle will be certified, the warranty should be included in the price. If someone attempts to charge you extra, question whether the warranty has already been put on your bill. How Does This Differ From an Ordinary Used Car? If someone wants to sell their car, their car isn't required to go through this rigorous test. These are often the cars you'll find on Craigslist or similar online market places. This means it's the new buyers responsibility to get it inspected (and pay for any necessary repairs). The used car also won't come with an extended warranty, and your only bet at getting one is if the remainder of the factory warranty is included in your used purchase (and even then, it may be non-transferable). If the used car doesn't come with a warranty, it's a good idea to get one. It's really incredible how much money you can save by opting for this route. If you decide to opt for a used car, the least you can do is the car-equivalent of a background check. All you'll need is the car's Vehicle Identification Number (otherwise known as the VIN), and a number of helpful websites, including Autocheck.com, will give you all the info you need. So Used Cars Are Cheaper Than CPOs? Usually, and it's generally estimated that CPOs can cost an average of $1,100 more (of course, take into account the inspection, as well as the assurance that everything will work properly). However, this isn't necessarily always true. As Jerry Edgerton of CBSNews.com points out, there are a number of brands that list their CPOs for only $500 more than a non-certified used car, including Chevrolet, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler. You'll see a significant jump in price when it comes to luxury brands, as CPOs could cost an additional $1,500. My CPO is Guaranteed to be in Tip-Top Shape, Right? That's would be an understandable assumption, but it's unfortunately not always true. Since it's ultimately the dealer's call on whether a used car can qualify as "certified," you may find yourself disappointed with the condition of your CPO. As Phong Ly of iSeeCars.com told Edgerton, these dealerships aren't held to any "standards in order to be in the certification program," meaning the standards across the industry could be inconsistent. The process mentioned above would result in a 'dealership-certified vehicle,' but it's a better idea to opt for the 'manufacturer-certified vehicle.' These cars are guaranteed to go through hours of testing and inspection. The alternative route, meanwhile, may result in your car barely being looked at. Furthermore, the car has previously been on the road, and it's likely traveled significantly more miles than your ordinary new car. This means an issue may have been brewing, but may have previously been too small to be detected by a mechanic. Additionally, while CPOs are often one to three years old, there's no reason why an older vehicle can't be certified. You can save yourself a headache by making sure the dealership's certification program is backed by the manufacturer. If it in fact is, they'll require the dealer to inspect at least 125 features of the car, and they'll also stick with their warranty. It's also a good idea to find out exactly what got fixed in the certification process, and there's nothing wrong with asking for the certification report. Any Other Tips I Should Keep in Mind? Just because you're in the market for a used car or a certified pre-owned, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't operate with some sense of logic. The process for picking a car shouldn't change just because the car isn't new. You'll still want to test drive the car, making sure it properly fits your needs and desires. You'll also want to know the price range of a specific car. Plenty of websites will suggest prices for a specific certified pre-owned car, and some will show the difference between those values and an ordinary used car. Don't be afraid to negotiate, and don't be afraid to walk away. Find a website that you trust and stick to their figures. If the dealership is offering a car for a significantly higher price, it's worth your time to look elsewhere. As you can see, the only downside for purchasing a certified pre-owned vehicle over a used car would be the price tag. When you consider all the benefits that accompany a CPO (the warrantee, the inspection, the ease you feel knowing you're not driving in a potential death trap), it's clear which vehicle has the upper hand. If you are to take away one lesson from the post above, remember to always be vigilant. Do your research before you go car buying, regardless of whether you intend on purchasing a new car or not. Electric cars will certainly be the vehicle of the future, and their increasing popularity is making them relevant in the present. Unfortunately, the car isn't a realistic choice for many potential buyers. The cheapest 2015 electric cars, the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, are priced around $23,000 to $25,000, but the two are among the smallest vehicles on the market. The more adequately-sized Chevrolet Spark EV, the third-cheapest 2015 electric car, comes in around $27,645. Purchasing a new electric car provides an additional risk, as we don't have much precedence to suggest a reasonable re-sell value. Luckily, electric cars are beginning to hit used car lots, and the National Automobile Dealers Association (via their Used Car Guide Perspective) has taken a look at how these cars have retained their value. Among one-year-old cars, the Tesla Model S topped the list, with an 83.1% retention (from $93,890 MSRP to $$77,983 average trade-in value). A pair of Chevy's made the list: the Volt (with a 56.1% retention value) and the Spark EV (with a 47.2% retention value). The lowest on the list? That honor belongs to the i-MiEV, which retains less than 35% of it's value. When it comes to two-year-old electric vehicles, it's the Model S topping the list again (71.1% retention value). The Chevy Volt, the lone member of the brand on the list, resells for about 36% of it's original value. The Ford Focus Electric retains just under 35% of it's value, the lowest on the list. Finally, for three-year-old electric vehicles, it's (surprise, surprise) the Model S again leading the way (57.2%). The Chevy Volt is listed fourth, retaining over 31% of it's value. The i-MiEV trails the rest of the pack, finishing with a 20.6% retention value. As you can see, electric cars seem to have relatively solid resell value, and Chevrolet can usually be found in the middle of the pack. The Ford F-150 continues to be the best-selling vehicle in the United States, but Chevrolet would like to convince you that they have a superior alternative. The Silverado, which finished right behind the F-Series in the New York Daily News' March 2015 ranking of the best-selling vehicles, is popular in it's own right. The truck has seen a more than 14-percent increase in sales over the past year (compared to the less than three-percent drop for the Ford), but it's still sold 80,000 less units than the F-Series. To help differentiate between the two trucks (and, obviously, to help boost the vehicle's sales), Chevrolet has released a new series of advertisements that praise the Silverado's steel body… while criticizing the aluminum body of the F-150. If you happen to be in the market for a new truck, check out the commercials below, and then get over to your local Chevy dealership as soon as possible. After all, if Chevy has their way, your Chevrolet dealers in Lexington, Kentucky may be sold out of the Silverado by the time you get there… more Steel Cage vs. Aluminum Cage The first video shows four men having to choose between a cage made of steel or a cage made of aluminum. Why do they have to choose? Well, they were picking their shelter in anticipation of a 700-pound grizzly bear being released into the room. Predictably, the men all choose the steel cage, citing the aluminum as too "easy to bend" and "light." "The Almighty Aluminum Man" The next video involves a focus group of comic enthusiasts debating whether "The Almighty Aluminum Man" is actually a logical superhero. The group laughs off the concept, criticizing the choice of metal. Members say they can easily crush an aluminum can with their hands, and many compare the metal to trash (although, they do acknowledge that it doesn't corrode easily, making the suit "efficient" and "light weight"). One person even goes as far as to inquire whether the designers have a science education. Meanwhile, the groups suggests some more logical metals, including platinum, zinc… and, you guessed it, steel. Howie Long Compares the Two Trucks The final video features football legend (and apparent Chevrolet spokesperson) Howie Long talking with Chevrolet Chief Engineer Eric Stanczak. The two discuss the differences between the Silverado and the F-150, with a particular focus on the different aluminum and steel frames. In particular, Stanczak cites the excessive cost of aluminum, and he notes that body shops would be required to "invest in new tools and training" so they'd be ready to repair such a vehicle. The crew also recreates an accident involving a large truck backing into both trucks. They're both brought in to their respective brand's dealership for repairs, and it ultimately takes 34 less days and $1,755 less to repair the Chevrolet. When it comes down to it, there's no denying that the Silverado's steel frame is a better buy than the F-150's aluminum frame. Whether it's the metal's strength, durability or cost to repair, the steel consistently comes out on top. The prices are comparable, and the specs slightly favor the Silverado. In late May, the state of Texas suffered through historic rain and floods. You're probably familiar with the images showing submerged, abandoned vehicles littering flooded highways. Well believe it or not, those vehicles may soon be coming to a dealership near you. Copart, a company that works with insurers to handle vehicles damaged in devastating calamities, recently said that as many as 10,000 insured vehicles endured significant water damage during the floods, with about 2,500 of those vehicles having already been towed away to a processing facility. You'd assume that the damaged vehicles would either be thrown away, scrapped for useful parts, or retitled to indicate that they've indeed suffered from water damage. However, that's not always the case. Sometimes these processing companies will "title wash" the vehicle, essentially masking the fact that the car ever experienced any water damage. CarFax estimates that there could be as many as 800,000 such used cars currently on the road! more "Unfortunately, some of the flooded vehicles may be purchased at bargain prices, cleaned up, and then taken out of state where the VIN is switched and the car is retitled with no indication it has been damaged," the National Insurance Crime Bureau said in a statement ( via Jillian MacMath of AccuWeather.com). Water doesn't only effect the car's aesthetics. It can have a serious effect on your electrical and computer systems, which would subsequently have a negative impact on the lights, wipers and locks. It can also cause a variety of other issues, including defective airbags and anti-lock brake systems. This means if you're in the market for a used car, you should be aware of these masked vehicles. Luckily, there are a number of indications that will hint that a car has endured water damage. Before you head out shopping for a vehicle at your local Lexington used car dealer, take a look at the tips below… Utilize the Sniff and Eye Test You've likely experienced what a lingering, wet odor can smell like. If there is a musty scent emanating from the car, particularly the carpet, that should raise immediate red flags. Furthermore, if there has been an attempt to mask that musty smell with an air freshener, that should be a further indication. Don't just rely on your nose, as those processing facilities may have done an admirable job in eliminating the stench. Check the Carpets The carpets (as well as the upholstery) are the biggest indication of water damage, as they'll seemingly hold moisture indefinitely. As mentioned previously, check for any wet or smelly spots. Make sure to check for consistency in the carpet, as it should match throughout the vehicle. If you notice that the carpet is mismatched, loose, stained, cut, re-sown, or even completely new, you should start getting suspicious. After all, these car manufactures dedicate plenty of time, money, and manpower into features as insignificant as a carpet, so even a little blemish or uneven installation could be a sign. The best place to check for these discrepancies is under the front seats, as the people making over the vehicles often rush through the project, missing some of the harder-to-reach areas. Look for Rust When you combine metal and water, you get rust. Therefore, the orange-brown corrosion could indicate that a used car had previously been flooded. The most serious impact rust can have on a car is in the system's wiring. If wires in the dashboard or engine seem to deteriorating, water damage is a likely explanation. Particularly focus on the car's brittle wires, as those often prove to be the most vulnerable. There's obviously plenty of metal in the body of a car, so there are plenty of areas you can also target. Check the doors, the hood and trunk latches, the dashboard, the pedals, even any essential bolts holding objects in place… don't leave any stone unturned. As mentioned earlier, the people fixing up these water-damaged vehicles often rush through their project. While they may mask some rust damage, they've probably forgotten about some, too. Check for rust in hidden, forgotten areas, like underneath the car's carpet. Not only is rust unsightly, it can ultimately break down the body of your car. Overall, it's just a better idea to avoid vehicles that have considerable rust damage. Make Sure Everything's Working There's really no limit on what water damage can do to your car. If you're considering purchasing a used vehicle but you're suspicious of potential water damage, make sure you check to see that every feature is working properly. Turn on the car and make sure that all the lights on the instrument panel are functioning. Test all the lights inside and outside the vehicle, including the turn signals. You should also keep an eye on the air conditioner, windshield wipers, radio and heater. You'll probably want to take a look at the engine's oil, as well. While the color of the oil should be very dark, water-damaged oil may be considerably lighter, often resembling light coffee or a milkshake. If there's a bright side, a minor issue could save you money if you decide to go through with the purchase. Reversely, a minor issue could be an indication that there's a larger, concealed problem. Rely on Other Sources Regardless of whether you're suspicious of water damage, it's always a good idea to get a detailed vehicle history report prior to purchasing a used car. A website like CarFax can help identify any previous issues/damage, as well as any title changes. While these reports won't report any problems that were seemingly brushed under the carpet, they'll at least give you a clue to the previous condition of the vehicle. You should also bring your potential purchase to a mechanic. Even after checking through all the warning signs above, a professional may be able to recognize an issue that you didn't even think to check.   It's understandable why you'd be in the market for a used car, and more often than not, you don't have to worry about water damage. However, considering the Texas floods and the subsequent (assumed) sale of refurbished, previously-damaged cars, it's a good idea to keep this tips in mind if you decide to shop. CarFax recently released a map showing the number of flooded cars in each state. States in the northwest and New England are on the low side of the ratings, while states like Texas, Florida and New York top the list. The 2011 Malibu came in four trim styles; LT, 1LT, 2LT and LTZ. Housing a 2.4L 4 cylinder engine with 169 horsepower.  It has a combined average of 26 mpg (22 mpg city/33 mpg highway).  The LT and LTZ boast a 3.6L 6V engine with 252 horsepower. Having improved on exterior style to come with a more sleek, sportier approach, Chevy didn’t lack on the interior details either.  Immediately noticeable are the two-toned trim colors, ambient lighting and a blue backlight to illuminate the gauges.  The seats provide enough room for every guest or grocery bag. Safety is of particular importance to the good people at Chevrolet and they have something to brag about with the Malibu.  Featuring both front side and head curtain airbags, the 2011 Malibu comes equipped with antilock disk brakes as well as stability and traction control. The 2.5L 4 cylinder engine wins in fuel efficiency with 23 mpg city and 34 mpg of highway driving beating out  the 6 cylinder 18 mpg/25 mpg (city/highway). 2010 Toyota Camry Could be the most refined on the list with a quiet, comfortable and elegant ride, the 2010 Camry is a win in most categories.  The midcycle makeover had some notable changes to the 2010 model was welcomed. Among the changes; replacing the older 2.4L engine to a 2.5L engine as well as upgrading the previous years 5 speed is the new 6 speed automatic or manual transmission.  Other upgrades include larger headlights, new grille and redesigned tail light.  Bluetooth and satellite radio were introduced as standard in the 2010 Camry. Coming in four different trim models, a 3.5L V6 was offered in every one but the base model.  Boasting 268 horsepower and 248 lb./ft. torque the 2010 Camry still gets an impressive 19 mpg/28 mpg city/highway.  The 2.5 4 cylinder, 168 horsepower, is the more fuel efficient sedan getting 22 mpg/33 mpg (city/highway). With top notch ratings in safety, it’s understood why the Camry is always a preferred family sedan.  Every 2010 Toyota Camry came equipped with antilock brakes with brake assist, stability control, front-seat airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Camry a perfect five stars in all frontal and side impact categories.  The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave their top rating of “Good” in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests. The interior, while designed for function and utility, also caters to comfortability.  Plenty roomy enough for your family with all sorts of storage nooks to hide away toys and books, this is the car you take on your family vacation. Automatic dual-zoned climate control, bluetooth connectivity, reclining and folding rear seats, moonroof and leather interior are available on the XLE trim and would still have you below the $15,000 mark.  Possibly one of the best perks of cars a couple years older; affordable luxury upgrades. 2013 Chevy Sonic Developed as a replacement to the Aveo, that was treated like a red-headed step-sister, the Chevy Sonic has been impressing mom and dad since day one.  Attempting to please everyone, the Sonic is available as a sedan or a four-door hatchback.  The options on this one are plentiful. Coming with a 4 cylinder engine that has left some to wonder what the fuss is, the upgrade to the turbocharged 4 cylinder has critics much happier.  The turbocharged engine provides a smoother, quieter ride and provides better fuel economy. The option for standard 5 speed manual or 6 speed automatic transmission both exist which is nice for those who don’t get that choice in most sedans anymore.  A six speed manual comes standard on the turbocharged. The turbocharged also gets the best EPA mileage coming in at 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.  That bests the base model at 26 mpg/35 mpg (city/highway).  It also beats most others in this category. Like others in this category the 2013 Sonic also received top rating of “Good” by the IIHS.  The Sonic got an overall of five stars in safety ratings from NHTSA. As as a welcomed surprise, it’s roomier than its smaller size would leave you to suppose.  The interior design has left some underwhelmed, but given its base and and where you’re finding the perks, that seems alright with the audience. The perks are in the audio and stereo system.  Using MyLink as the infotainment system, there is also satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity and a six speaker system.  Its bright colors and bold features, along with great technological perks coming standard, this 2013 Sonic appears to be playing to a younger, more hip demographic. 2011 Mazda 6 Probably the most attractive sedan on the list, the Mazda 6 can prove it is more than just good looking, though some of its best qualities are in athletic handling and engaging performance.  C’mon Mazda, we all know you’re the cool kid in class.  Go ahead and take a bow. Coming standard with a 6 speed manual, 6 or 5 speed automatics are also an option.  The 4 cylinder engine ranks about the same as its competitors in fuel economy; 22 mpg/31 mpg (city/highway).   An option for the 3.7L V6 engine, which matches its sporty shape by reaching 60 mph in 6.5 seconds using 272 horsepower. Boasting the largest trunk space in its class, the Mazda 6 compromises nothing in interior room and comfort.  Thoughtful and considerate to ergonomics, the seating is available in leather in different trims. Rated “Good” by the IIHS, some of its safety features aren’t as strong as others in this category, but the Mazda 6 is still getting top safety awards. With all these models possessing similar qualities and ratings, their styles and trims are all quite different.  For under $15,000 you get a stellar choice of sedans with value, style and reliability. Edmunds.com said the Mazda is "fun to drive," and that could be attributed to the vehicle's impressive specs. Despite the smaller 2.0-liter 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, the Miata can still crank out 155 horsepower and 148 ft-lbs of torque. The compact size means things can get a bit tight inside, but that's about the only qualm when it comes to the 2016 model. You can tolerate less head space or leg room when you recognize the low-operating costs. While we're not yet sure about the 2016 model's fuel efficiency, we can assume it'll be similar to last year's much-appreciated 21 mile per gallon city/28 mile per gallon highway specs. 2016 Nissan 370Z Among mid-range sports cars, there's no better choice than the Nissan 370Z. The brand has received praise for the impressive 3.7-liter V6 engine, which can produce up to 332 horsepower and 270 ft-lbs of torque, and the 370Z has also been known for it's superb handling abilities. While Nissan may have prioritized those two attributes over comfort, there's no denying that the 2016 sports car is one of the best on the market, and part of the success could be attributed to the luxurious interior. The Bose sound system now comes standard, and Nissan has also included the Active Noise Control and Active Sound Enhancer technology. There's no doubt that both these additions make for a better driving experience. It's affordable, too, as the 2016 model can be had for $29,990. If it's a little out of your price range, remember that the vehicle can deliver excellent fuel economy (19/26 mpg). 2016 BMW M3 We understand that $64,195 is a lot of money, and many people can't realistically afford this vehicle. However, when it comes to premium sports cars, there's no doubt that the BMW M3 is the best buy. Considering all the changes, including making the Harman Kardon surround sound system a standard feature, the price only increased $1,245 from last year's model. Some current Chevy vehicles, including the full-size Tahoe and Suburban LT and LTZ SUVs, are quipped with the Theft Protection Package, and the new notification system will integrate itself with the existing technology. This means an armed car's alarm will sound if the vehicle is lifted off the ground, a window is broken, or motion is detected within the vehicle. The system won't notify the cops, but a complementary service will. The existing Stolen Vehicle Assistance service has the capability to help track the vehicle (via the car's GPS) and subsequently alert the authorities to the car's location. The system can disable or slow down a stolen vehicle, allowing the police to catch up. "Prompt response and quick awareness of theft situations give customers a greater chance to recover stolen property," Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet's director of truck marketing, said in a press release. "By leveraging the connection that OnStar provides, Chevrolet owners can remain in contact with their vehicle, even when it is out of sight." This news follows GM's announcement that they're also going to be using OnStar technology to provide car owners with prognostic vehicle data (allowing you to compare your stats to other drivers), driving habits (which can later be used to get a good-driver discount from your car insurance), and car-specific, money-saving coupons. As mentioned above, all eligible OnStar subscribers can access the service, but they'll need a subscription to OnStar's Security of Guidance package. It will be available in the US and Canada later this summer. This bit of added protection could go a long way. By taking advantage of the technology available, parents who are interested in how well their teen’s are driving when they’re not around can now keep track.  “Teen Driver” records certain information such as speed, mileage, radio volume then rates the teen on a report card.  The parents have access to this information to see how well their teen did and then the hope is the report will open dialogue about safe driving. more Why So Much Concern? "We developed this system so parents could use it as a teaching tool with their kids — they can discuss and reinforce safe driving habits,"  GM safety engineer MaryAnn Beebe. How Does It Work? As part of the on board infotainment system, parents can hook up the MyLink system via touch screen on the interface of 2016 Malibu.  Through this system parents can set limits on speed, volume, and mileage.  The Teen Drive system will give a visual and audible warning if any of the parental presets are exceeded.  Parents can access this information from the MyLink system. Teen Driver works when parent enables the feature by creating a PIN in the Settings menu of their available MyLink system.  The parent’s will then need to register their teen’s key fob. The system’s settings are turned on only to registered key fobs. Using the touchscreen on the interface, parents will have the access to predetermine speed limits, mileage, and volume.  Only the key set to the specifications will access Teen Drive mode. Teen Driver Report Card Along with the presets made by the parents, the system will lower or mute volume when a passenger or driver is not wearing a safety belt. Teen Driver will further alert the driver and parents to any of these situations should they arise: stability control, front and rear park assist, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, forward collision braking and traction control. At the end of the journey, the parent gets to review a ‘report card’ of sorts which will highlight if any of these above mentioned systems were utilized and further if any of the parental presets were exceeded.  While this may be viewed as a bit ‘Orwellian’, you cannot say these parents don’t care about either their car or teens’ safety. Skeptics While there are so many obvious benefits to Teen Driver, there are a few who remain skeptical.  Some have considered this technology to be ‘spyware’ and have compared this information to  being as invasive as the NSA. Really. Like with any new product, critiques are welcome and GM is open to hearing them.  They can only improve on what they already have and given this as a jumping point, I’d say the future is looking great.  However, even teens and parents alike have some some constructive concerns and feedback to share. If any of the presets are exceeded, nothing really happens; it simply tells on you. My guess is if your parents are concerned about your safety enough to have a preset key fob for you, they’re also the parents who are going to sit you down and talk about your excessive speeding in their vehicle.  The best way to not be found guilty is to not commit the crime. What kind of teenager is driving a brand new 4-door Chevy Malibu? Valid. Back when I was learning to drive no parent I knew was letting their teen drive their, or any, brand new car.  However, times are different and statistics are staggering.  There is a great deal of parents who care enough about their teenagers and want to ensure their utmost in safety (note: this is not to say my parents, or any back then, didn’t care.  Time, cars and technology were so vastly different even twenty years ago that it almost seems archaic).  Given the level of information we can obtain from our vehicles, doesn’t it just make sense we start using to better our everyday lives and the lives our loved ones? Have a conversation involving your entire family about car safety do’s and don’ts.  Sure, your teens are going to call you out on some bad habits you have, but this is a great time to show them how serious you are about safety that even you are willing to change.  (Right, dad?)  Remember, your bad habits are their examples.
