While you’d think that the car's electrical power is coming via a renewable source (like solar or wind), the vehicles will more likely be relying on a "coal- or natural-gas burning power plant." So yes, there hybrid cars are certainly better for the environment than you typical, gas-guzzling ride. However, there are still harmful environmental effects during the production and shipping, and you can help prevent the carbon dioxide emissions by choosing a used car. Value This is fairly obvious, isn't it? It's obvious that used cars would be cheaper than new cars, but there are a variety of additional financial advantages that accompany purchasing a used vehicle. If you're interested in getting future value for your ride, you'll get the best bang for your buck by opting for a used vehicle. It's generally accepted that a vehicle loses 15-percent of its value the moment it's driven off a lot. The price of the car will continue to drop over the next five years, until the depreciation rate slows down considerably. That's when you can capitalize. By targeting used cars that are at least five years ago, you can't expect your purchase to retain the majority of the value. Assuming you take care of your vehicle, you could realistically lose little to no money by purchasing a five-year old car and selling it a year later. As Weathers notes, the depreciation rate is slowest during years five and six, so you'll want to take advantage while you can. Furthermore, you can expect a lower insurance cost, as it's much more lucrative to protect a new vehicle. Since you may not be particularly concerned about the car's well being, you could even opt to avoid collision or theft coverage. Finally, you'll be saving money on repairs (mostly due to the lack of logic surrounding fixing an old car). As Weather writes, it's a rule of thumb to not put money towards repairs when they account for more than half your car's value. You may be taking a bit of a risk here, but it'll be worth it in the long run. Trustworthy This might not make much sense upon first view. How could a used car's dependability ever compare to a new car's dependability? Well, it can't. However, you can now trust your used vehicle much more than you could have only a decade ago. Weathers says a five-year-old vehicle is "likely to have about a third fewer problems" than a five-year-old vehicle from the mid-2000s. The writer attributes this partly to the improvements to essential parts (like the engine, transmission and exhaust), and he believes a car built in 2011 or later should last at least six years before it requires any essential repairs. With cars generally lasting 150,000 miles or longer, what may seem like a near-retirement vehicle may actually be a hidden steal. If you're skeptical of a used vehicle's ability and dependability, you could always decide to opt for a certified pre-owned car. These vehicles do cost a couple of extra grand, but they've also been signed off by the company for their reliability. Furthermore, certified pre-owneds are usually accompanied by an updated warranty, granting you with even more protection. Keep in mind that certification is especially important in regards to older used vehicles, but not as much with newed used cars. You should trust that you won't come across an issue for a car that's six-years-old or younger, making the certification not necessarily worth the extra money. Furhtermore, just to be sure, take your potential purchase to a local, trusted mechanic. They'll help you identify any hidden (and potentially serious) issues, and you can use this info to potentially negotiate a better price for the car. Safety/Technology Similar to the example above, you won't necessarily find a safer or luxurious vehicle when you opt for used over new. However, you can be safe in knowing that a used car nowadays is much safer and luxurious than a used car from ten years ago. With newer used cars hitting the market, many of these vehicles contain the innovative safety technology that wasn't around only five years ago. This includes stability control, revamped anti-lock brakes, and even side-curtain air bags (all features we've taken for granted in new cars). Stability control is of particular importance to Weathers, who proclaims the function as one of the most "critically important safety feature" in the industry. The system, which keeps your car on course and prevents it from sliding or swerving, has led to a 50-percent decrease in fatal-single car accidents. As the writer notes, nearly half of these accidents could have been prevented if the car had been equipped with the stability control. This also applied to the technology that’s found in a particular vehicle. You're not going to be able find an infotainment system that's compatible with the new iPhone in a 2000 model, but you'll surely find that from a 2013 car. You sometimes have to pay an arm and a leg to get these add-ons included in a new vehicle. For optimal performance, the Z06 is outfitted with a 7.0-liter V8 engine, which produces a whopping 505 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. With this engine, the Z06 crushes the zero to sixty performance test in 3.9 seconds. Despite the enhanced performance, the fuel efficiency ratings remain solid at 15 city, 24 highway, and 18 mpg combined. But, the power doesn't top out there. Check out the ZR1, powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, which roars with 638 horsepower and 604 lb.-ft. of torque. Even though it only returned a 0.1 second faster time than the Z06, behind the wheel, the feel is must faster. As far as fuel economy, the numbers drop a bit to 14 city, 20 highway, and 16 mpg combined. We couldn't care less. After all, who drives a sports car for its fuel economy? Even with all this muscle and power, the 2012 Corvette impressed the Edmunds team during brake testing, with the base model stopping from sixty mph in a respectable 118 feet, the Grand Sport and ZR1 between an outstanding 100 and 104 feet, and finally, the Z06 made the stop in a breathtaking 96 feet - practically a record-setter. So you're looking for a used truck, and you've ultimately decided that you want to purchase an older Chevy. Where do you start? Well the possibilities are practically endless. While your local Chevy truck dealer likely has a variety of different options, there are a handful that they're likely missing. Before you head out to used car dealerships in Lexington, Kentucky, see what trucks you won't be able to get your hands on… more 1990-1993 Chevy 454 SS The truck was based off the Chevy 1500, except the 454 SS featured the 454-cid V-8 engine, capable of producing 230 horsepower and 385 pounds of torque. So basically, they took a small truck and put in a heavy, powerful engine. Despite the revamped motor, the car's acceleration trailed the Camaro Z/28 and Ford Mustang GT, compiling a 15-second quarter-mile time. The car was eventually phased out by the Sport model of the Chevy 1500. So if you ever happen to come across an early-90s Chevy truck, how can you identify whether it's a 454 SS? They're pretty recognizable from the red interior and soft garnet red cloth seats, something you certainly don't see in newer Chevy trucks. 1958 Chevy Cameo Only 1,405 of this 1958 trucks were produced, the last of the popular Cameo line. The vehicle features several exterior updates, like the inclusion of sheet metal, quad headlamps, improved grill/hood emblems, and a variety of new colors to choose from. The truck didn't end up being particularly popular, but it paved the road for similar trucks, including the Ford Styleside, Dodge Sweptside, and the Chevy Fleetside. The truck is easily identifiable by it's sedan-like features and deep bed. Chevrolet S-10 EV Only 492 of these trucks were actually made, and Jalopnik.com claims that only 60 of them were ever sold! What made the truck so unpopular? The car was electrically powered via the EV-1 engine, allowing for only 114 horsepower. The car differed from previous S-10s in that it was configured with front-wheel-drive, as opposed to the standard rear-wheel-drive setup. The car accelerated from 0 to 50 mph in 13.5 seconds, and it's top speed peaked at 70 mph. It was only on the market from 1997 through 1998 before it was discontinued. We've been taking in all of the Chevy Bolt EV news we can possibly get, and the latest rumblings have to do with the vehicle's interior. Before you head out to a Chevrolet dealer like Dan Cummins, see why you may want to await the release of the electric vehicle… Brandon Turkus of AutoBlog.com got a look inside of the electric sedan, and we've passed along all of that information to you, which you'll find below. more Turkus describes the interior as a blend between the Chevy Sonic and Volt. The traditional instrument cluster has been replaced with a digital display, and that will accompany a large display in the center stack. Furthermore, the center display is reportedly using different software than that of other vehicles, particularly the MyLink system used by Chevy. This may ultimately end up being insignificant, as Turkus is unsure whether the system is solely being used as development software (which would indicate it's not intended for production) or if it's actually the future of the brands "connectivity suite." This is part of General Motors' desire to cater to all car buyers. "We're going to continue to make great cars and let the cars speak for themselves to people who want them," Fletcher said. "And we're not doing it with just one. Look at this from a showroom perspective. This is an incredible statement of the commitment of Chevrolet to electrification." It was originally reported that Chevy's new electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Bolt, would be ready sometime in 2017. There's good news for those hoping to get their hands on the first long-range EV (electric vehicle) by a mainstream brand, as General Motors announced that they've accelerated development on the innovative car. As a result, the Bolt could be available at your local Chevrolet dealers by 2016. more 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV Specifications 200-mile range A base price of $30,000 after full federal tax credit Single, high-capacity electric motor 60 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, featuring five sections, 10 modules, and 96 cell groups Large 10.2-inch-diagonal color touchscreen display with “flip-board” operation Regenerative braking feature 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Range The Chevy Bolt, which was introduced as a concept in January at the Detroit Auto Show and later confirmed in February, is part of Chevy’s electric car grouping, which includes the Volt (plugin hybrid), the Malibu (non-plugin hybrid), and the Spark EV. The Bolt is reportedly capable of going about 200 miles on a single charge. “We have experienced 200 miles. We’re pretty confident in that,” Pam Fletcher, General Motors executive chief engineer for electric vehicles, told Greg Gardner of the Detroit Free Press. “You can imagine we’re going to eke out every mile of the range we can.” 2017 Chevy Bolt Price While traditional battery-electric cars with similar ranges have a starting price tag of $75,000 (the Tesla Model S 70D holds that distinction), the Bolt will sell for about $30,000 after tax breaks. This is part of General Motors’ desire to cater to all car buyers. “We’re going to continue to make great cars and let the cars speak for themselves to people who want them,” Fletcher said. “And we’re not doing it with just one. Look at this from a showroom perspective. This is an incredible statement of the commitment of Chevrolet to electrification.” As Fletcher told John Voelcker of GreenCarReports.com, the company wants to make “electric cars approachable to all, not just to the elite,” which has clearly been reflected in the projected price tag. The Bolt is expected to be sold in all 50 states, and Voelcker guesses the car will also go on sale in Canada (based on the upcoming sale of the 2016 Chevrolet Spark EV). The manufacturers are testing out more than 50 hand-built prototypes, Bolt chief engineer Josh Tavel told Colias. The 2017 Bolt EV is already being assembled in both South Korea and at the General Motors Orion Assembly plant in Orion, Michigan. “Effectively these are the bones of the car that’s going to be the production Chevy Bolt,” Tavel told Greg Migliore of AutoBlog.com. 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV Design We got a sneak peek at the Bolt earlier in June, as a camouflaged crossover/hatchback was photographed during a road test. While there haven’t been many details released regarding any specific interior or exterior features, Migliore used the disguised car’s outline to come up with some basic, assumed features. “The car also has a tall greenhouse, slight creases in the sides, and a sloping roofline in back,” the writer described. “There’s a rapidly rising body line that makes for less glass for rear passengers, but that’s probably part of the camo.” Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield of TransportEvolved.com also tried her hand at analyzing the hooded car. She noticed an update rear tailgate, a previously undisclosed (at least on the concept car) rear wiper, and a considerably higher license plate holder. Gordon-Bloomfield suspects that General Motors may be eliminating their two-piece glass rear tailgate (as seen on the concept car), instead including a more-standard hatch with one pane of glass. All of these changes can be added to the list compiled during the revealing of the concept car, which saw alterations to the front bumper, lower apron, side mirrors, and wheels. Furthermore, Migliore reports that more than 1,000 Chevy engineers are testing the vehicle for competence in “ride and handling dynamics, cabin comfort, quietness, charging capability, and energy efficiency.” This week, we got a video featuring the camouflaged Bolt, with the vehicle being put through both speed and acceleration tests. The car is also shown being charged at a DC quick-charging station, using, as Voelcker points out, the standard US-German CCS connector. That’s about it for details, as Voelcker’s attempted requests for more information were denied. However, the writer believes the car’s architecture could be similar to the next-generation Chevy Sonic subcompact lineup, considering that both car’s are being produced in Michigan. When asked about the lithium-ion cell supplier and the size of the battery pack, Fletcher told Voelcker that the “LG Chem has been a very valued and trusted supplier.” A big selling point for the Bolt (and fellow electric vehicles) will be the availability of the necessary charging stations, and owners will probably be inconvenienced as they look to recharge their batteries. Of course, as Volt chief engineer Andrew Farah told Gardner, the dedicated owners should be able to recharge from the convenience of their own homes. “As these EV ranges get longer, the idea that you have to get a full charge overnight at home is not so much an issue because you don’t usually discharge it every day completely,” Farah said. When Can I Buy a 2017 Chevy Bolt EV? It looks like you’ll have to wait more than a year to get behind the wheel of a new Chevy Bolt. If you notice your car is struggling while idling or jerking when reaching high speeds, this could be an indication. Regardless, your car should notify you via the check engine light. A typical oxygen sensor repair comes in around $250. Like the other parts mentioned on this list, there's no avoiding a replacement, as the sensor is essential to your car. Catalytic Converter You've likely heard this part mentioned by mechanics and car enthusiasts, but we wouldn't blame you if you have no idea what the catalytic converter actually does. To put it simply, the "vehicle emissions control device" essentially takes the pollutants in your gas and converts them to less toxic pollutants. To get the desired result, the catalytic converter with catalyze a redox reaction, meaning the exhaust won’t be as damaging to the environment. In particular, the converter removes carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons from the gas, helping prevent the development of poisonous gasses, smog and acid rain. Unfortunately, it's not very easy to identify when this particular part isn't working. Mechanics are often required to remove the entire part to determine whether it's malfunctioning. Trouble accelerating could be a sign that the part is failing, as would a drop in fuel efficiency. If the problem gets too bad, the increased exhaust will prevent your engine from even running. A broken catalytic converter could be attributed to the use of lead gasoline, as well as over-use of fuel additives. A failing exhaust valve or "fouled plugs" (which cause all unburned fuel to overheat the part) could also be attributed to a catalytic converter's demise. If replacement of the part is covered by warranty, you'll want to get down to a mechanic as soon as possible. The positive? It's a relatively common repair, and CarMD listed it as the second-most common fix among used cars. The negative? It's going to set you back financially, as the part is estimated to cost around $1,150. Ignition Coils/Spark Plugs The fourth-most common repair for used cars, both of these parts are essential in igniting the fuel. The coil, sitting in the ignition system, takes the battery's low voltage and transform it into thousands of volts of electricity. This is then sent to the spark plug, where an electric spark helps ignite the fuel. When you hear a car commended for it's excellent "electrical performance," there's a good chance that the spark plugs (and, vicariously, the ignition coils) are doing their job. If your ignition coils are failing, there will be an assortment of warning signs. If you notice that your car is backfiring, this likely means that unused, non-ignited fuel is being pushed through the exhaust system. You may find that your vehicle is having issues starting, the vehicle is stalling, or the engine is misfiring. Similar to the other issues on this list, you may find that your fuel economy is also diminishing. The symptoms of a dying spark plug are pretty similar. If you notice your engine is either vibrating or letting out an odd noise while you're idling, that could certainly be a sign. A lack of a spark could also prevent your engine from even starting, and it could also make your car stall. You may also notice an issue with acceleration, as well as a surging engine (when the vehicle jerks around or starts and stops frequently). Of course, a bad spark plug will also lead to you wasting plenty of money on unused gas. If you find yourself needing to replace the two parts, expect to drop at least $400. Without the ignition coils or spark plugs, it's doubtful that you'll even make it out of your driveway. Fuel Injector This part isn't as popular as those mentioned above, but it's just as (if not more) important. The fuel injector serves as the main delivery system for fuel used in the engine, replacing the function of carburetors. While the previous part would rely on a suction from the intake air to draw fuel into the airstream, a fuel injector instead distributes a fuel-air mixture into the cylinder, allowing for a more precise measurement of fuel. This can help improve power and fuel efficiency. A bad fuel injector has some unique indications that it's not working properly. If the part is malfunctioning, your engine will be receiving an irregular amount of fuel. This will mean the engine's power will fluctuate, as opposed to a smooth and gradual ride. You may also notice the engine misfiring or an awkward idle, as well as decreased fuel efficiency. If the part has a small crack, you may see some leaking fuel, as well. Repairing a fuel injector isn't as common as the fixes listed above, but it's still something to look out for, as the CarMD report ranked it tenth among used car fixes.
